There is some Piracy along the West African coast but generally not an issue for ships in transit along the coast.

The hotspots are actually at the entrance to the Red Sea and along the coast of Somalia, Yemen and Sudan affecting ships in the Indian Ocean bound to/from Suez.

All those stretched-out companies begging for a float will be breathing a sigh of relief now that she is buoyant once more.

Apparently temporarily parked on the eastern bank of the canal and smaller ships have already been allowed to go by on their way. After checks made for soundness of the hull, she'll be slowly moving later in the day.

Picking up on an earlier post, I expect there will be questions as to how far fooling around might have allowed this small lapse in concentration.

Well done Smits and everyone involved in the de-corking!

Anyone care to count the number of ships queuing at either end - and there are a few holding in the Great Bitter Lake too.

So much computerization and the most precise number I've seen reported is 400+.

That was pre-pilot. (Or so I believe.)

Yes, I’m sure it was pre-pilot, but it does seem to indicate the state of mind of someone at the wheel in the run-up to this sorry event.

The news reports I saw stated that the front end is still stuck in the mud, they've only managed to free the rear end and swing that around.

Correction: updated reports just out state that it is indeed completely free now.

Yep, she's out and heading North at 8kn https://www.vesselfinder.com/?imo=9811000

Wasn't she originally heading South?

But my beer supply has still not moved, it's in a bunch of perhaps 150 ships anchored off Port Said.

Someone at the wheel doesn't have a mind of its own.

Now that the Suez canal is open again, is it not time to agree that the present-day size of some ships that use it is out of proportion to those for which the canal was originally built? A major investigation and rethink of the suitability of the canal without modification for such vessels should be a priority.

An incident, due (to my knowledge) to unknown causes shouldn't be a reason to arrive at any conclusion.

Is it possible that super big ships like this will be banned from using the Suez channel in the future due to their limited maneuverability? Or are any other restrictions coming up for them?
