Legal insurance

Just received house and contents insurance renewal, and the offer includes legal expenses cover. I've always declined this in the past on the expectation that - well, it's insurance, and if I really need it they will find some clause that says it doesn't cover my case, and I can write a pretty effective letter with menaces myself anyway.

Today I read the T&Cs and it seems pretty comprehensive, so I wondered if anybody out there had actually had cause to use this type of cover, and whether it worked or not. Thanks in advance.

Yep, while still living at my mother's flat I had a cycling accident with a pedestrian which was legally my fault despite him not looking before stepping into the road - mother's household insurance covered a session with a solicitor and took care of any claim subsequently made by the idiot er victim... I got a small fine and never heard any more about it...

So I've always had Legal insurance as it is a small outlay for a fair amount of peace of mind.

Utterly useless in many cases. It is always sold as an add-on because it is lucrative.

I never bother but recently it was thrown in with my house insurance. I am currently involved in litigation. The Legal Insurance said they would cover it, then found a clause and changed their mind. When I found a decent firm to pursue my case and asked if I had legal insurance they asked who they company was. I told them and the response was that he, the solicitor, wouldn't deal with them because in his words 'they will do anything to avoid paying out' apart from never answering e-mails or returning telephone calls. Interestingly this is a firm who seem to supply a vast amount of legal insurance.

I have heard similar stories from others that legal insurance rarely is worth the expenditure.

Of course, just my experience and opinion.
