The last part of that video above shows a smaller initial fire, with what look very much like fireworks going off, or possibly smaller munitions cooking off, around the base of it, followed by the massive explosion that caused most of the damage. If it was a firework factory, then one has to question why such a thing would be located in the centre of the docks area.

Israeli officials have stressed that they had "nothing to do with the explosion." Tensions between Israel and Hizbollah, a Lebanese militant group backed by Iran, have soared in recent weeks at the border between Israel and Lebanon, as well as at the Israel-Syria border. ... Even Hizbollah has denied Israel played any role in the Beirut explosion, according to Lebanese media, which quoted a Hizbollah source who distanced the group from the rumour.

The blast is being blamed on a stash of explosives

Lebanon's Head of General Security says the blast was caused by a fire in a depot of highly explosive material, including Sodium nitrate, at Beirut's port. He said that material was confiscated from a ship months ago and stored there.

Wouldn't rule it out....FWIW they've only just finished rebuilding the area in the south east of Toulouse that in 2001 experienced 300 tonnes of Ammonium Nitrate exploding at a chemicals factory on an industrial estate.

29 dead, over half the cities windows smashed, steel girders found several km from ground zero..

Apparently heard loudly 280 KM away in Cyprus, residents thought the explosion was nearby. Kind of amazing the distance the sound travelled.

Interesting that on Google Earth, two military logistics looking vessels are tied up at the berth next to the building that went up.

If it were 'fireworks' then there should at least have been a nice daylight display for quite a while after the initial blast wave.

There were some reports of Jet Noise in the area just prior!

Just wondering if it was...

Just a query for those who might know. Would that spherical shock-wave and blast be characteristic of a thermobaric weapon?

Looks more like HE, from the shock wave and the pattern of destruction. There was no real indication of the sort of massive fireball that's more typical of a fuel/air device. The scenario fits with there being a fire at a warehouse where a large volume of ammonium nitrate fertiliser was stored, although there did seem to be a number of smaller explosions at the base of the fire shortly before the large blast.

VP, two thoughts.
The explosion reminded me of one of the Mythbusters detonations where they I think they loaded a concrete mixer with ANFO...
Also, the strange rust red/orange cloud...?

My guess is that there was a mix of stuff stored, maybe they stuck all the quarantined "dangerous cargoes" in one warehouse? That sort of fits, as AN on its own isn't that easy to get to detonate like that, it needs a pretty hefty kick to trigger it into detonation, plus there really needs to be fuel available to be oxidised. It could be that whatever was burning was giving off large volumes of something other than oxygen from decomposing AN, and that then triggered the switch from deflagration to detonation. Whatever it was, there must have been tonnes of it, from the scale of the blast. The detonation velocity looks to have been very high, from the videos of the shock wave. My money is on there being tonnes of various compounds being stored in close proximity, with something like AN being the most likely oxidant involved. I wonder if they had fuel oil stored at the same site? A fuel oil fire, plus leakage, combined with a warehouse full of AN fertiliser, might make for a blast like this.

Thanks VP
On the BBC now...

President Michel Aoun tweeted it was "unacceptable" that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate was stored unsafely.
