I originally thought this was sarcasm, but now I'm not so sure:
https://babylonbee.com/news/activist...y-white-people
"Anywhere we see a person of color, we see racism. So we must end racism by making sure people of color are not depicted anywhere," said white liberal activist Petunia Faucett. "We will not rest until all pop culture icons of color are eliminated. Then, racism will be over."
The Babylon Bee was established as a sarcasm site - usually with a right wing slant - but lately reality has gotten so insane it's become hard to tell the difference.

Eskimo chocolate-coated ice-cream bars just became history...I don't think the one shown on TV had any pictures of the people, so I guess it was for the name.

I'm surprised that this hasn't been posted here yet, as it seems to have a perfect answer to the problem.

I've never heard of Captain Birdeye. On the other hand, the similarly named Captain Birdseye is a well known brand of frozen fish / other food.

On the subject of fish and skin colour, I would have thought that fish, many of which have a white skin on one side and a dark skin on the other side are possibly the most politically correct animal known, should therefore be the last ever to stand accused of showing any bias, colour prejudice, racial discrimination or hatred, given the lengths they appear to go to to fit in with everybody of all shades.

Other fish, some squid and chameleons go that step further, changing their skin colour to blend seamlessly into their environment, in their efforts not to stand out or be noticed at all. Respect to them for their sense of diplomacy in these volatile times! Truly multi ethnic credentials, and well ahead of their time.

Not sure all the words would be acceptable today despite the sentiment. Probably best to ban it and erase all recordings; just to be on the safe side.
Take a pinch of white man
Wrap him up in black skin
Add a touch of blue blood
And a little bitty bit of red Indian boy
Oh like a Curly Latin kinkies
Oh Lordy, Lordy, mixed with yellow Chinkees, yeah
You know you lump it all together
And you got a recipe for a get along scene
Oh what a beautiful dream
If it could only come true, you know, you know

The local kayak club have now renamed the eskimo roll as the First Nation rotation!

There you go Barksdale Boy and Treadigraph a blast from the past for you

If you poke around on You Tube you will find Jeremy Taylor talking about the song and singing an up to date version. Unsurprisingly the original "n****r balls have become sugar balls, but Eskimo pie has remained.

Incidentally one of the most popular brands of ice cream in the old USSR was эскимо. I'll leave you to decipher the Cyrillic!

TTN

Listened to it yesterday. My knowledge of the cyrillic alphabet derives solely from my study of Greek, but I reckon that's eskimo.

Quite correct. Cyrillic uses a mixture of the Latin, Greek and Hebrew alphabets, so your Greek was a help.

If I remember correctly, the word Eskimo, is derived from a Russian word, from the days when Russia owned the North-Western corner of the North American continent.
I was also told, at a dog show at Denali, that the word "Husky" has the same roots.
Where are the Russian-speakers now when we need them?

However on occasion he quotes the everyday speech of British soldiers, when he has to resort to a peculiar word "mucking" and also "muck off". Strange to think that his publishers had no problem with the N word but must have insisted on the bowdlerised form "mucking" before letting the book go to print. Now of course the position is reversed. I even understand that a there is a published version of a well-known Conrad novel entitled "The N word of the Narcissus" (sic)!
The C-word is even less printable than the N-word yet slang for male genitalia is commonplace, go figure.

The Bible has to go.

Judges 2. God himself sells the children of Israel to the Jabin king of Canaan.
Judges 10. They had redeemed themselves, but again God sells them to the Philistines and Ammon
Again the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord delivered them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years

WN, well I'm a non native speaker of Russian (albeit for twenty years and still crap) and didn't know the Russian for Eskimos (but could take a damned good guess and I was correct!) - "эскимосский" - translated as Eskimoh-ski )))

When in doubt in Russian I generally pronounce the Russian phonetical version of the English, usually goes a long way ))

+1! Happy memories brought back to me! Had the Eskimo Hut near the showground in B'wayo. Always a treat to be taken there. And off to (near) Durban on holidays! Happy days!

Sad Zim (as it is now) is the way it is today. But, clearly, that fact and how it got there escapes most of the protesters being discussed in another Thread.

Back to happy thoughts again - apologies for Thread drift!

My older sister reckons she can remember most of the lyrics and does recall the "N" word - I didn't! We were aged about 11 and 6; what I do recall was our extended attempts to roll the "r" in Canada Dry... 50 year ago...

We used to go to the Drive In at Nairobi; think there were two, one under the circuit for WIlson Airport (I can recall seeing something being screened while sitting in the back of C172 while dad was doing his night rating!) and another on Thika Road?

And I guess we lose the third line of "The Sun has got his Hat on" (Ambrose and his Orchestra - 1932).....

"The Sun has got his hat on, Hip Hip Hip Hooray
The Sun has got his hat on and he's coming out to play.
He's been tanning N-words, out in Timbuktu
Now he's coming over here to do the same for you."

Could anyone please explain why a banner bearing ‘white lives matter’ causes national outrage whereas thousands of people of varied origins and skin tones can wilfully ignore social distancing waving banners with ‘black lives matter’ get national approval?

It isn't so much as national approval I suspect, more a case that nobody (Politicians, media etc) wishes to risk putting their head above the parapet (to state the obvious), scared witless that the ire will be then be directed towards them.

That is where we are today, identity politics trumps rationality.
