Statues et al .....

I wonder if attention will shift to those masters of slavery - the Romans. Plenty of statues to focus on there. Or is there a cut off someehere in the timeline?

This statue needs pulling down immediately. The dog ‘Bobby’ was a cat hating animal living in Edinburgh and his image does not deserve to be on show where it upsets many cat lovers.

M Mouse, hope you're not suggesting that the pub shouldn't reopen in due course?

I find it hard to understand how someone with the pen name M.Mouse could be writing in favour of people who keep the domesticated vermin that destroy mice and birds for pleasure.

On a more serious note, I wonder how long it will be before those advocating the removal of all monuments to the human race's disgraceful treatment of others will be shouting for the removal of Auschwitz & similar commemorations of other despicable behaviour.

Far better, the viewpoint espoused by one learned Professor yesterday that ALL of these various ornaments to past injustices and iniquities are retained, but with proper information, freely available to the passer-by as to the behaviour, both good and bad that resulted in said ornament being erected. [Kudos here to Edinburgh City Council for their actions.]

The Human Race is all to quick to remove reminders of the less than admirable behaviour of some of its self-appointed representatives and all to quick to forget the lasting damage that has happened and how it came about in the first place.

There is no Black or White as far as an individual's character or motive is concerned, only shades of grey. Humanity needs something planted right in front of its collective nose to remind it of Quis Custodiet Custodies?

Anyway, back to proper Jet Blast activities now,.........

That two bob waste of space Sadiq Khan cannot resist jumping on any passing band waggon.

heard a historian today pointing out that these people don't even know the history behind any of the statues.

They didn’t have statues raised in praise of their slave business but because they did much good with their money building schools, libraries etc.

If you want to look for racists in history there are plenty of other targets. Marx and Engels, Che Guevara, Gandhi to name a few but they don’t fit the narrative of the racists of the left.

Except it wasn't their money was it. It was tax payers money. The abolition of slavery in the UK cost 40% of the UK budget. A sum so vast that we were still paying it off until 2015.

By all means remember these people for their deeds ill or good, but don't display them as cultural icons on pedastals looking down on the rest of us. We don't tend to see staues of Saville or Hitler in our cities and as far as I know, Europe either.
Their names belong in history books. That is all.

Will new statues to replace the old have their penis lopped off before or after their erection ?

You can't even take the kiddies to a museum anymore to teach them the facts of differences, now they have to discover the variations by snooping into dad's internet history file

By that definition a Jimmy Saville statue would be OK as he raised vast amounts for charity. As would a drug baron as long as he was philanthropic with a chunk of the profits.

It's not quite the same thing.
Although distasteful to many people then and even more people nowadays, the way that Edward Colston, Robert Milligan etc earned their money was legal at the time.
Even though Jimmy Saville was raising money for charity, he was still involved in criminal acts whilst alive and the same goes for drug barons.

Is the statue of George Washington to go from Trafalgar Square? Pictures of Jefferson, Franklin,. Washington (all slave owners) to go from the national gallery?

tes with pictures of Jefferson and Washington on them should be withdrawn...Liverpool's Penny Lane and Gladstone Dock should be renamed. In the interests of equality (if that exists), any statues of murderers like Mugabe and racists like Ghandi should be removed..

The statue breakers seem to me to be in the same mould as the ISIS vandals who destroyed so much of Palmyra a few years ago...being an non-repentant out and out reactionary, I would have a long jail sentence for all of them - and the wishy-washy left wing politicians who support them. Destroy the statues and you destroy the history so people forget them and their sins...

Beyond living memory & a catalogue of dates, history is fluid, "written by the winners", influenced by perspective, an "informed opinion". That's why people keep getting doctorates in the subject and then pontificate their views via TV series.....

What about this monument. It is a monument to an invention by a couple of blokes which has caused untold death and destruction.
Do we also knock this one down?

The whole messy thing is starting to look like toppling superficial dominoes.
No one is really looking at the core problems both sides have.

Does anyone think ingrained, endemic racism will be excised by demonstrations, censorship and hiding history?

That's it
They actually believe there are sides. Too bad they align with races. It makes it impossible to even the field.

It's bad enough to deal in society with "far-left" and "far-right. c"onservative vs liberal"." Democrat vs Republican", now we are supposed to recognize differences in values between black and whites in our society.
