Wouldn't you expect to find rumors in a rumors forum? It is quite possible to verify news, especially the spectacular claims. Exchanging information might bring oneself closer to "the truth" -if ever- then not exchanging them for fear of fake news.

And, yet again, one has to wonder at the workings of HM government. Apparently 11 Britons are on a flight from Wuhan to France. Upon arrival, they will be transferred to a flight to Brize Norton and thence to Arrowe Park, presumably by another bus ride. I can understand the reluctance to allow 80 odd passengers to arrive en mass at Liverpool but with just 11 on this flight, a quick trip in the back of a C130 or perhaps a Chinook direct from France to Liverpool would seem a reasonable solution?

Rumours maybe, but I think that is different from deliberately false information.

Although in fact the HIV story may be innocently based on poor science. I just looked for the evidence underlying this claim of HIV-like sequences. It may be this:

https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...01.30.927871v1

If so it is a totally spurious and statistically meaningless similarity reported in an unrefereed 'paper'. It's nice to see people following-up on the report and doing their own sequence comparisons to test the idea. That is how science is meant to work, and only made possible because China shared the sequence very quickly.

I wonder why the government is looking for only 480 people? China Southern flies a 787 every other day direct from Wuhan to Heathrow. Given the virus outbreak was first noted in December, there should be an awful lot more than 480 people involved.

Indeed. This

There seems to be a massive amount of false information and fake news spreading on social media (including this forum) about this virus. The BBC (themselves not immune from spreading fake news) have this article on it: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-51337357

I think one conclusion we can draw is probably to be suspicious about any story spread via social media, unless the source data has been confirmed to be reasonably reliable by cross checking.
I totally agree, social media is the perfect medium for message mixing by those so inclined. Apart from this site, I have zero social-media input.

Yes, it's bizarre how some people seem to get a kick out of starting a completely false story and seeing if it will run.
I'm assuming this is pointed in my direction. This is a discussion thread about the rapidly spreading Coronavirus that has it's origins in China. There are many facets to this outbreak and if someone adds an angle to a discussion, (assuming there is no malevolent intention), then it is put there to be discussed. I have read many articles over the last month and some of them were unusual and piqued my interest, more than the 'fleeing sagas' that the media seem to love at the moment.
The twitter feed I chanced upon was by Dr Eric Fliegl-Ding, he seems somewhat respectable in academic terms. The original 'HIV-insertions' that might have indicated a non-wild virus have now been disproved by a group of Indian scientists. That said, apparently CSHL found a couple of insertions that allegedly throw that into academic dispute again. Who know ? Certainly not me.

No, not at all. I am sure you are innocently reporting rumors, and it's hard to criticize that on this site! But the originator is frequently malicious. Although in this case, even that may not be true. See my post above.

If the spread of this virus is a fact (fact = a thing that is known or proved to be true), then the Chinese government really has something to worry about.

Here's an inspiration. The new hospital in Wuhan has been completed in 10 days!
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-...-in-60-seconds
I wonder if they could find the time to knock up a few here in the UK (Trump permitting, of course).

A bit amateurish.

On the Radio this evening I heard that 2 of the repatriated German citizens on a military A310? flight who are being quarantined at a Military Barracks have tested positive.

So, the repatriation flight from France to Brize landed earlier this evening and it was an A318, G-EUNB, a BA plane leased to Titan Airways. An A318! And they don't want to fly it to Liverpool!

Evacuee from coronavirus-hit China ‘taken ill’ in UK

One of the passengers who landed in the UK from coronavirus-hit China on Sunday has been taken ill and escorted to hospital.

The patient began to feel unwell on the second evacuation flight carrying 11 British nationals from Wuhan to RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire. The patient has been taken to hospital for coronavirus tests, while the other 10 continued their journey to join 83 others at Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral, according to an email from Janelle Holmes, chief executive of Arrowe Park.......

An internal email from Ms Holmes, revealed by the Liverpool Echo and also seen by the PA news agency, said the unwell passenger “immediately self-isolated” and was taken to a separate NHS hospital when the flight landed.

The email said: “Dear all, as you know, we were expecting a further 11 people, repatriated from Wuhan in China, to arrive and join you in the accommodation block at Arrowe Park Hospital last night. During the flight, one of the passengers started to feel slightly unwell, and self-isolated immediately. Upon landing, that passenger remains isolated, and was taken to another NHS hospital for tests. We expect test results in the coming days, and will keep you updated.

“None of the other 10 patients have shown any symptoms, but as a precautionary measure the 10 new guests were allocated rooms in a separate area of the facility, isolated from those already here. As we have previously said, staff supporting those in the accommodation block are following strict clinical guidance and protocols to ensure everyone remains safe.”

It comes as the British Embassy in Beijing tweeted that the last flights from China to the UK for British nationals are set to leave this week. It said flights will leave this week run by “partner countries” and any British national and their immediate families, including those with non-UK passports, must make it known if they wish to travel.

“These may be the last flights for foreign nationals out of Hubei,” the message said........

Wuhan Coronavirus Looks Increasingly Like a Pandemic, Experts Say

The Wuhan coronavirus spreading from China is now likely to become a pandemic that circles the globe, according to many of the world’s leading infectious disease experts. The prospect is daunting. A pandemic — an ongoing epidemic on two or more continents — may well have global consequences, despite the extraordinary travel restrictions and quarantines now imposed by China and other countries, including the United States.......

“It’s very, very transmissible, and it almost certainly is going to be a pandemic,” said Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease. “But will it be catastrophic? I don’t know.”........

“This looks far more like H1N1’s spread than SARS, and I am increasingly alarmed,” said Dr. Peter Piot, director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. “Even 1 percent mortality would mean 10,000 deaths in each million people.”

Other experts were more cautious. Dr. Michael Ryan, head of emergency responses for the World Health Organization, said in an interview with STAT News on Saturday that there was “evidence to suggest this virus can still be contained” and that the world needed to “keep trying.”......

Epidemiological modeling released Friday by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control estimated that 75 percent of infected people reaching Europe from China would still be in the incubation periods upon arrival, and therefore not detected by airport screening, which looks for fevers, coughs and breathing difficulties. But if thermal cameras miss victims who are beyond incubation and actively infecting others, the real number of missed carriers may be higher than 75 percent........

The virus’s most vulnerable target is Africa, many experts said. More than 1 million expatriate Chinese work there, mostly on mining, drilling or engineering projects. Also, many Africans work and study in China and other countries where the virus has been found.

If anyone on the continent has the virus now, “I’m not sure the diagnostic systems are in place to detect it,” said Dr. Daniel Bausch, head of scientific programs for the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, who is consulting with the W.H.O. on the outbreak. South Africa and Senegal could probably diagnose it, he said.

Nigeria and some other countries have asked the W.H.O. for the genetic materials and training they need to perform diagnostic tests, but that will take time. At least four African countries have suspect cases quarantined, according to an article published Friday in The South China Morning Post. They have sent samples to France, Germany, India and South Africa for testing........

Video makes you question the totals being provided by the Chinese Foreign Ministry....

Coronavirus: dozens more die in Wuhan as death toll passes Sars virus

Dozens more people have died in the city at the centre of China’s coronavirus outbreak, where hospitals are severely undersupplied and understaffed and residents have described increasingly desperate conditions. Chinese state media reported 57 new deaths on Monday, all but one in Wuhan, the capital of the central province of Hubei which has been under lockdown for almost two weeks as authorities try to contain the outbreak.........

A video apparently filmed in No 5 Wuhan hospital went viral showing body bags in a bus, and a man weeping next to his dead father. In the video the person filming says: “So many people just died. There are so many dead bodies … they are still moving bodies.”........

All bad new lately, but does it really make a difference in our lives?

Should we go out and buy body bags because we don't believe the hype?

Or is it time to descend into our old bomb shelters we dug in the garden back in the 50's. Will the can goods we stocked there to take us through a couple of weeks still be good?
