Internet search engines.

I was used to using Google when looking for a "how to do" a diy job, car repair etc. It was wonderful for ages, now all I get are ads. no relevant info.

Anyone got any suggestions on a decent search engine?

Continue to use Google, but install AdBlock Plus, it's free.

I've become sufficiently unhappy with Google's business practices that I avoid using it.
I usually use Bing - yea I know it's Microsoft - but at least MS is honest about their greed.

I second DuckDuckGo - it's excellent and they don't track you - hence no personalised ads.
Another non-tracking search engine is Startpage
A great feature of Startpage is "Anonymous View" - from their website:
"Clicking search results means leaving the protection of Startpage.com. This could lead to a barrage of cookies being installed on your device. That’s why we developed the "Anonymous View" feature. With "Anonymous View" you can visit search results in full privacy, and keep on browsing: They’ll never know you were there. You’ll find the feature next to every search result."

Another good feature of duckduckgo is that if you add !g to your search string, it sends an anonymized copy of your search string to Google.

Another vote for DuckDuckGo. Google's search results are becoming increasingly irrelevant besides the adds.

Yep.
Google has gone evil, so it's DuckDuckGo for me too.

Those shortcuts (which they call "Bangs") are super useful. So if you type "!guk searchterm" DuckDuckGo will send an anonymized search for "searchterm" to Google UK. !ga for Google Australia etc.
A few others:
  • !imdb - IMDB
  • !b - Bing
  • !liveatc - Live ATC
  • !a - Amazon
  • !ebay - eBay
  • !w - Wikipedia
  • !fr24 - Flight Radar 24
13,000 in total https://duckduckgo.com/bang

One good feature of this thread is that nobody has yet referred to the search engine as "Giggle" in some mistaken belief that we are not supposed to to type "Google" on this forum. Similarly "Fleabay" and "a South American river site" (Orinoco?) are not necessary either.

Try Brave, blocks most things and speeds up your searches etc as it doesn't download adverts and other junk.

Instead of complaining about Google or Fleabay, try accusing them of something danaging that affects us all and see how you fare

As a seller I have given up complaining to ebay. Their standpoint is all sellers are crooks and all buyers are whiter than white. This has not gone unnoticed by many fraudsters who make a nice supplementary income out of swindling sellers in the sure knowledge that ebay will do nothing about it. Fortunately I now only use ebay for selling low-value items up to around 10, but I still occasionally get caught.
