Picture the scene.....

A smoky bar in Greenwich Village, NYC in 1966, Chas Chandler was trying to persuade a young, up and coming rock guitarist to come to England and play. Before he said yes, the young man said, "Mr Chandler, I have just one question, if I come to England, will I get to meet Eric Clapton?"
The young guitarist - Jimi Hendrix.

Don't put much effort into reading these polls myself, it's all subjective, a bit like comparing Ali & Tyson or Pele & Best.

As long as I know in my mind, then Clapton will always be the best.

surely this has got to be a matter of personal taste.
I have to admit that I am a little surprised that even though John Williams and Julian Bream have been mentioned that there hasn't been a mention of Andre Segovia

1. David Gilmour
2. Mark Knopfler
3. Carlos Santana
4. Al Di Meola
5. Eric Clapton

I notice no Van Morrison, no John Lee Hooker in the original list .

Arrow

For inventive guitarists who have defined a unique sound, I'd have to go with Brian May, and The Edge as mentioned as above, in addition to the genius that is Billy Corgan.

Agree with Randy Rhoads, the guys from Maiden and esp Segovia.

What about Paul Kossof? Even Clapton said he couldn't hold a note like Koss.

Got to agree with reynolds

Rory Gallagher

anytime

although it was quite amusing with a pub rock band saying they were going to do a Rory Gallagher number 'set to music'!

Řystein Sunde of Norway!
At least that`s what Clapton replied when asked whoS the best guitar palyer.

Anybody who calls himself "The Edge" to be considered "artistic" just proves that he`s gone OVER the edge.U2 SUCKS!!!

What about Johnny B. Goode?

Seriously, U2 was half the reason I picked up an axe, and Brian May was the other. Even when he tested the Burns Red Special on Guitarist last year, he made you go down on one knee in front of the speaker!

We're not worthy! We're not worthy!

I may cop some flak over this one but Todd Rundgren should have been on the list.

Hendrix & Santana both absolute guitar legends.

The true injustice in this list for admirers of un-ponced-up rock is that Angus Young languishes at number 20 (Malcolm should have been there too).

I agree that The Edge (whilst pretentious) is one of the few to carve out for himself an utterly distinctive and original sound.

Ritchie Blackmore should be higher too, if only because he now has the nerve to admit that he is a wizard who dresses in black looking for elves in the stream at the bottom of his garden

Feh.

No Bob Mould? Feh.

No Pete Townsend? Double-feh.

Tom Morello?? Ugh. Hard to imagine a less-musical choice. RATM is all about crunch, not music.

Sigh.
