Terry-Thomas made movies that would have been good, great. Admittedly, I am a big fan of his, but his comedic skills were second to none. I know this isn't a British movie, but I cannot forget the fight scene with him and Milton Berle in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World; it has remained with me since childhood.

I know it got a brief mention early on in the thread, but The Cruel Sea is surely one of the greatest movies that came out of the UK in the 50s. Jack Hawkins' acting was superb and when I first saw it as a young child, the scene where they drop depth charges underneath the survivors who are swimming on the surface was powerful - so powerful I remember it very well today.

The Long and the Short and the Tall?

A great favourite of mine.

Or perhaps The Hill with Sean Connery?

Noah Zark,

I think the film that you are struggling to recall could well be either "Cone of Silence" or "The Sound Barrier."

Either way it was a neat reversal of the situation that many on here harp on about endlessly, the Yanks winning the war etc, as this was an entirely fictional account of the UK being the first to break the sound barrier...
