Big Boy Runs
I know there was a thread here somewhere concerning steam trains, but I can't find it.
Anyway Union Pacific ran Big Boy 4014 for the first time on May 2nd. For anyone interested!

A bit of background - On May 1, the locomotive ran under its own power for the first time in sixty years, displacing Union Pacific No. 3985 as the largest, heaviest, and most powerful operational steam locomotive in the world.
Great to see.
But about that diesel hanging off the back .......?

4018 is here in Frisco, just outside Dallas
Museum of the American Railroad > Collection > Collection Overview
I saw it when the museum was in Dallas. No idea how they got it to Frisco, though I suppose there's a connecting RoW and they pushed it up there

Now why can’t UK locos have whistles like that?
That tinny penny whistle on the Flying Scotsman is a joke.

I agree - could never understand that. The chime whistles on the A4s and some other locos are fine, but unfortunately they are the exception. I like the doppler effect here

It's called "Contingency assistance".
It's also about providing dynamic braking on the train. Something steam locomotives don't have.

Wingnut,
The diesel will be there for use as a “breakdown truck”. 4014 is running on main lines and UP can not afford to have the track blocked if 4014 should become unserviceable.
Just out of interest, I looked up another 4014 - a GWR Star class 4-6-0:

4014 Knight of the Bath. Affectionately known by the crews as 'Friday Night'. Built March 1908.
