John Stalker dead

I don't often start threads but just read the bad news that John Stalker has died (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...ester-47259799).

Most I guess will only vaguely remember him, but he sticks in my mind as clear from the late 80's as he does today.

Although my views on the police aren't great, this was one fine copper with the utmost integrity of whom upheld the law even when it was detrimental to himself and his career. It's a sad indictment of today that there are few that can even come close to his decency and professionalism.

Truly the end of an era, the old school.

Remember him as getting close to the truth in Northern Ireland and the establishment conspired to destroy him.

Chief Constable Stephens had a long chat with him when he was investigation security forces collusion with loyalists. Stephens copied every single piece of data and had it shipped to London as amazingly a fire of unknown origins on a fully secure military base destroyed all the evidence in Northern Ireland. Stephens was reported to have just smiles and said a silent thanks to Stalker.

flash8,

Couldn't agree more with all you say about the man, but have to disagree about few today coming close to his decency and professionalism. As someone who works with the Police on a regular basis, I am seeing more and more like him, far from being the end of an era, I think he and his example was a beginning.

pr00ne, I truly hope that is the case, can't say I am hopeful, but well likely just extreme pessimism on my part, and you certainly would know more than me, does give me some comfort.

Good to hear.

it seems as though the masons don’t have the influence of years ago.

“There were also behind-the-scenes fears that a Masonic plot within the police against Mr Stalker could be revealed during one of the most controversial episodes of the Troubles, according to newly declassified files that were released in 2016.”

My best memory of him was as the narrator in the Rocky Horror picture show at the Wimbledon Theatre some years ago.

Well you know how it is.....spontaneous combustion can happen anywhere at any time......

His book is well worth reading but along with his involvement in N.I, it's worth remembering that he rose to prominence with his involvement in the "Moors Murderers " case. Lets remember, that, in that era there was little or nothing in the way of support and counselling services available and it's a remarkable tribute to him that he came through what nothing could have prepared him, and just about anybody else to be frank for, listening to the tapes and viewing the photographs of their activities.

His Chief Constable at the time is unlikely to receive the same plaudits when he passes away given he managed to alienate the population of Greater Manchester, law abiding and otherwise, from GMP.

He also advertised security blinds. When we were looking to move house about 15 years ago we viewed a property that he had previously owned. Said blinds were in situ - the person who then owned the place said they had been fitted as part of the deal for doing the advert. Seemed a nice place when we first viewed it on a dark winter’s evening. However when we went back for a second look in daylight we spotted the overhead electricity cables that went straight over the house, and were crackling, presumably as it had rained. Put us right off!

I am too lazy to subscribe to conspiracy theories but the whole Stalker thing in the 80's stank at the time and still does.
