I always thort former NZ Prime Minister David Lange's description of traders and markets was particularly apt.
He described them as reef fish.

About personal sentiment having a role think the example of the wine producer is a good example, they can sell next years growth knowing how much they will receive to produce the year after and someone else will carry the weather and other risks for that year, if the weather and conditions are better than contract then you get the favourite bottle slightly cheaper, the producers will be able to carry on and if the weather is bad the wine despite being capable of a better taste will still do the job... Don't know if that parallell works for the pounds though
