I liked his comment on getting the knighthood that he'd been a knight before...

Not just any knighthood, but KCMG in the Diplomatic Service list for "services to travel, culture, geography"
makes the point that it's not part of the "entertainment industry" hand-outs, which so many of the rest are.

And there are other deserved awards for decent people too (I note the BEM for Eva Clarke). It's not all corruption and nonsense as some are claiming elsewhere.

Well deserved. Long history of funny as hell and a great writer to boot.
Don't know how his wife can put up with all his extended slow jaunts around the world.

There are some that would paint a very different picture of him during those jaunts around the world. Thats showbiz eh? Royalty, politics, acting, music & sport. A bit like the five pillars of Islam yes?
A few years ago a good friend of mine was offered a "gong" from the palace. She had to go on a certain day, wearing a certain dress, all at her own expense. she was "instructed" how to behave with the minor royal handing out the trinkets, obviously to make the minor royal look good of course. Before attending she emailed back if there was perhaps some sort of a cash alternative to this "award". She didn't hear from them again....

That surprises me. Our garden party invitation specifically said "no need to dress up" (not that anybody took any notice of course).

Well, with respect, that was only a garden party.

Ok, forget the Islam reference, I'm not trying to score those sorts of points. It's certainly the showbiz "trades" looking after their own though.

Have you never seen one of his travelogues? I met him in Toronto once, just walking down the street. I went up to him and said " 'ere, you are,... you're that bloke on the telly!"
