Need you back on our team Hussar, so all the best to you. Of course, things will not change in your absence but perhaps something from Her Majesty's speech has got through, so thank you, wiggy, for your good wishes. Reciprocated and extended to Sproggers who doesn't really deserve them but hey! - it's Christmas!

Seems that Corbyn has only managed to make no. 4 in the Wiesenthal Center's (sic) list of the world's worst anti-semites.

So, plenty of scope to have another go at the top spot for next year.

Tomorrow, I'm off to hospital for approx 10>12 days so won't be joining in, but I'm fairly sure that you will all manage perfectly well without me although I'm equally sure that in another two or three weeks we'll all still be discussing the same old things and opinions, and nobody will have changed their minds.

See you all in a few weeks....
Hah ! another bed blocker then. Well you would be if you were in the UK NHS...of course, you may well prefer private healthcare so a 10-12 day stay in a BUPA 5* hotel, where you every wish and whim, well maybe not every wish...cough !.... could be catered for.

Anyway I reckon this 10-12 days is really only 1 or 2 but, given your location, you are astute enough to have included the possibility of the odd few days of strikes which may extend your stay a bit.

Look forward to seeing you back and fully recovered.

Just one other helpful thought....please don't read the Mail or Excess as by doing so, your recovery and convalescence may well be more extensive than you anticipate.

Of course they want this fabled trade deal, on the basis of America first where the UK is screwed left right and cetre but is in a position of weakness and will paint whatever outcome as a resounding success and "good for Britain".

I'd recommend holding off making any deal until after that stupid man is out of the Whitehouse.

51st State

I recall this was vogue in the 50s.

The phrase "51st state" can be used in a positive sense, meaning that a region or territory is so aligned, supportive, and conducive with the United States, that it is like a U.S. state.

Gertrude: Shame on you for providing that link in your post #1987! When you read condemnations of Jewish organisations as being "anti semitic", it becomes obvious that this is a Zionist rant. And condemning a U.N. organisation that wouldn't need to exist if it was not for the actions of the Israeli State is ludicrous! Jeremy Corbyn makes #4 on the list because Margaret Hodge had a spat with him ignores the number of Jewish organisations that came out in support of him at the time. The rhetoric is becoming depressing. People like Corbyn, and thousands of others, have consistently taken the view that the State of Israel is wrong in their treatment of the Palestinians, wrong in their occupation of the West Bank, wrong in their flagrant disregard for U.N. resolutions, while running to that same U.N. when it suits them to further their aims. It is coming to something when condemnation of a nation leads automatically to the presumption that this leads automatically to an assumption that this means condemnation of a religious group.

That's the way it works. You only have to mention the P word to be automatically condemned as an anti-Semite.

The choice between believing he Simon Wiesenthal Center or some rant from some random bod on the internet is not a difficult one to make.

KelvinD.
yes, I struggle with this. It goes back to Chaim Weizmann and his Zionist mates. In the UK prior to WW1 there were 2 clear groups of Jews. Zionists and Integrationists. The I's wanted to be British and retain their religion. The Zs wanted to have their homeland and belong there. Rothschild was intitially an Integrationist.
CW was a bit cheeky in that he took British citizenship when it suited him - he was born a Russian. He dumped British citizenship when it suited him.
There are still Integrationists in the UK, but the Spin doctors paid for by Israel get folk to complain when someone points out, for instance, that since 1967, for every Israeli killed by Arabs, Israel kills 10 Arabs. (Source - The Times).
I do think it is OK to complain about a State's actions, but not be anti-semitic. However, putting flowers on the graves of murderers is a bit daft.

I read Gertrude's link, and followed on with some other stories on that site.

It celebrated the fact that thousands of new settlements had judt been authorised in the West Bank, and additionally that thousands of previously illegal sites had now been legalised.
However much one might admire the many achievements of the Israeli people, their policy of creating lebensraum out of the Palestinian lands is unjustified and unforgivable.

It does not make one anti-Semitic to condemn this, or to express sympathy for dispossessed Palestinians. However I do not speak for Corbyn, who may have other motives.

Quite correct, it doesn't mean you're anti anything. It simply means that you acknowledge UN Resolution 2334 which was passed unanimously in 2016 by the Security Council, with one abstention (USA).
The resolution concerns the Israeli occupied territories.

PN,

i doubt it, seeing a Alaska didnít become a state until Jan 59 and Hawaii Aug 59.

Doing a a little digging the phrase started being used during the 1960s. Unsurprisingly it replaced the the phrase ď49th stateĒ.

ORAC, I certainly remember something like that and it might have been the 60s..interestingly I found the following claim in the Independent of 1999:
