Good to see

At least he is not sticking with the elder statesmen" regardless of form or ability. Good luck to the bloke, he has conducted himself impeccably, as has Harry Kane and the majority of the squad despite all the provocation; (I speak as a rugby league fan, and football is no way my first love, but England have shown how shameful others' conduct has been). Keep going and be proud of yourselves chaps.

Well, by great good fortune, we haven't come up against a decent team yet... the corollary of that is that I could really see an on-form France or Brazil putting 5 or more past us in the Final...

Of course, that assumes we get past Sweden and that nice Mr. Putin lets us beat Russia on home soil, without resorting to chemical warfare, air strikes, Buk missiles or anything else in his bag of KGB tricks.

Still - fingers crossed!

What think thee for the next round? I trust France will despatch Uruguay and while I hope that Belgium can get past Brazil I am having serious doubts. They might have been able to make good a deficit against Japan, but they cannot get in that position again.

Agreed - he has got them playing as a team rather than a group of talented individuals.
That's it in a nutshell. Too many teams seemingly focused around one 'great' player.

I was underwhelmed by Gareth Southgate when he was first appointed, but I’ve subsequently been impressed by his dignity, intelligence and professionalism.
Exactly!

I think both QF's in the 'tough' side of the draw are quite hard to call, and I'm looking forward to both matches.

As for Engerlund, I fear the Swedish defence will prove to be a tough nut to crack, and it could well go down to penalties again.

It seems Mr Maradonna is not pleased with England's victory: "Monumental theft" he said. Rich coming from a fat, drug-addled cheating has-been!

I think it would be wonderful to see England win the World Cup, and if they could do it by one controversial goal . Even better
Nothing more painful than getting beat by one goal or even Worser ( real Scottish word ,honest ) getting gubbed by a hand goal that the ref missed because his service dog was not allowed on the pitch to help him see .😂

I don't know which sport you are watching, apart from Henderson's pathetic clutching of his face after being headbutted on the chin, the Columbian team are a disgrace. They should be barred from international competition for 10 years!
Same with Neymaaaaaaaar. A pathetic example. Why have FIFA have not clamped down on this? I hope he gets a proper injury against Belgium and never plays again. He and his ilk are ruining the game.

An excellent article in The Grauniad.

I think part of the problem – at risk of sounding politically incorrect – is that in some parts of the world pulling a fast one over the authority figure is culturally seen as admirable and something to be commended. When Maradona scored his infamous ‘Hand Of God’ goal, far from being embarrassed the Argentinians were delighted. He had successfully hoodwinked the referee and linesman, and in their eyes that made it every every bit as valid as a conventional goal. I think a lot of the histrionics and play acting we have seen is just an extension of that mentality.

For sure we need to create a culture of respect for the referee. Maybe there should be a sin bin system whereby any player who subjects the referee to prolonged harassment is sent to the bench for 10 minutes. Perhaps if Columbia knew they were at risk of being temporarily down to 6 or 7 men for 10 minutes then they would have been a bit more muted in their response.

They can. I think the problem is that if every Colombia player who deserved a Yellow card for dissension got one, they'd only have one or two players left on the field.

Now that would be even better than a penalty shoot out.

its always seems odd that the intimidation of officials in football which has been very obvious at this world cup, never seems to happen in rugby where the players understand and have far greater respect for officials.

is the time spent in harassing the ref added to the end of each half as well as injury time?
