Does this mean anything sinister?

I have recently noticed that when I open a thread in PPRuNe, my computer shows the little spinning disc indicating that something is loading, in fact it stops me doing anything else.
When this happens I usually close Safari and re-open PPRuNe and the problem seems not to repeat itself. But it does often happen on the first opening.
Has anyone else noticed this?
Does this mean that PPRuNe is uploading something to my computer?
Should I be worried?

In my view, Safari doesn't seem to handle web pages with a lot of "media" content very well.
I now use a new OS X browser called "Brave". It is free, very quick and has a built-in configurable add-blocker.

Happens continuously in Chrome for me (on a very high spec windows machine) and ESET NOD32 is for ever warning/blocking various adlinks

Slow loading web pages are rarely the result of Browser inefficiency, rather that the syndicated advertising media servers are slow to deliver content into your advertising frames.

Spinoffs like googlesyndication.com (Well what do you think Google is gonna do with all that "telemetry" data they are uploading off your pc) then pay the site owner for real estate on their pages that I visit, which it then offers to other advertising media groups to populate. In many cases it is the pipe to that media group's web server that is slow to deliver. 90% of sites would not exist if they could not sell space for advertising.

When you think about it, that's how come the internet is "free". Lets not get into what you give away when you agree to register with a site, that's a whole different kettle of fish.

Install an adblocker and some sites will not even allow you access.

Someone (everyone) wants to make a crust.

I have had the same problem both with PPRuNe & another IB site recently. Everything else works perfectly.

Sometimes, and only sometimes, I can stop that - let's call it a loading ring - happening by running CCleaner. It's as though my kit is really choked up with something.

I did have a period where I was burdened with that ring in just about every site. Finally, a new router cured the slow loading problem. I just hadn't thought about hardware being part of the issue.

I use Chrome and have installed Adblock and Adblock Plus. Just opening PPRuNe (which starts instantly) they blocked 10 ads in the first 15 seconds. Previously the spinning ball used to run for ages but now I hardly see it.

I don't know if this is relevant
I had an invitation from a client via email to an evening function in a venue in the City I had never heard of. I do know the City fairly well.
Because I was absent I never even responded until too late.
In the interim, PPRuNe frequently flashes up adverts for this venue. How does this happen? Is PPRuNe reading my incoming emails?

No, but Google Adsense may well be doing so, if you searched the place on Google at all it will know that. All the more reason to set your browser to clear all cookies, history etc at the end of every session.

Andy: And perhaps more reason to use Duck Duck Go.

Safari > Develop > Empty caches

That works well for spinning wheels in Safari

Do you use Gmail?
It scans your emails to serve you related adverts. They could appear on almost any site that you visit.

The 'loading ring' disturbs me.

I first noticed it after getting my laptop back from a purge to remove a virus (which made said laptop unstable to the extent that it wouldn't run).

My suspicious mind suggest that the guy who removed the virus has installed software to enable him to take control of my computer - as he suggested that he could 'repair' any further infection remotely.

What I would like to be able to do is view what is being transmitted where whilst that blue circle is rotating - it used to be possible with earlier 'DOS'.

If you are IT literate, you could install a packet sniffer such as Wireshark. This will show all the network traffic in and out on your laptop.

As long as you only give away false personal details, and use an email address you never look at, you don't really give away anything. I'm sure I learnt to do that from a post on PPRuNe.
