Nail bomb in Salford Manchester

Explosion in Salford was caused by 'device packed with nails and screws'

A device which exploded outside a café in Salford was packed with nails and screws, the M.E.N. can reveal. It was left under the shutters of The Lounge in Concord Place, Douglas Green, Pendleton earlier this week. It caused damage to the shutters, canopy, windows and pavement.

A loud bang, at around 12.30am on Tuesday, could be heard across Greater Manchester. It came after a Vauxhall Corsa car was badly damaged when an industrial style firework was attached to the rear of the vehicle in a street in Eccles three days earlier.

GMP have said the nature of the device at the café is still the subject of forensic examination. But a source told the M.E.N: “It was packed full of nails and screws and forensics have been pulling them all out of the woodwork.” A second source close the investigation confirmed that nails were in the device.......

Four men have been arrested on suspicion of possession of explosives after a dramatic police chase.

At about 7pm on Thursday officers saw a Lexus car on Stockport Road, which was thought to be stolen and linked to the explosions. Officers followed the Lexus for a short time before it stopped and reversed, ramming the police car near to Regent Road in Salford. The occupants of the car abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot but officers soon caught up with them and detained them. The men, aged 20, 24, 24, and 29, have since been bailed pending further enquiries.

have since been bailed
And one hopes passports confiscated... assuming of course they have one... however bailing them doesn't seem the wisest of moves...

Bailed? Then the police can't believe that this was a serious attack.

No, but if it was an experiment to test the viability of using the explosive mix it is certainly an indication of their intent.

Running from and ramming a police car should bring a jail sentence on its own without bail. Down here in Oz, ramming police cars happens that often laws are tightening up to deter the practice. As for the blast, any way you look at it, there is intent to hurt and kill. No body builds a shrapnel filled bomb and sets it off in a public place I just for fun. If the four who ran from the police and were bailed were implicated anyway with this incident it would prove that the British legal system is as lame as the Australian one. Unless the police know something I don't (probably).

Bailed ! Does anyone know if "bail" can be given in all offences or just those with low level offending. Surely intent to maim/kill as in this instance, is insufficient for bail?

First we don't know that the four were connected with the bombing. All we know is that police have arrested four men after a chase and collision.

But I agree, bail after deliberately ramming a police car does seem odd.

Evanelpus,

Nothing!

People have rights and there IS such a thing as innocent until proven guilty. If the Police had real evidence that they WERE linked to the explosion then they would not have been bailed. They didn't, so they were.

Once you start allowing the Police to detain people because they think there might possibly be a link to something but have no evidence; substantial, circumstantial or evidential to back it up, you are on a VERY slippery slope.

My first thoughts were 'why give them bail?'
However after the knee jerk reaction I felt that the attitude -
People have rights and there IS such a thing as innocent until proven guilty.
Reflects a far more civilised society to which I am proud to subscribe.

Possibly just hoodlums overreacting to the firework on the back of the Corsa? Ordinary crims have been known to use nail bombs etc so why is everyone jumping to the conclusion it is terrorist related?

Bail leaves them free to associate and communicate and there's no law against following people about to see where they go and who they meet.

No injuries.

Your post history is full of tacky comments even when people were injured.

That's also a very good guitar pickup.
