Marijuana legalised in California

I see today Marijuana had been made legal for personal use and will be available in retail outlets from 2018 in California USA

It is claimed that people haves right to take drugs if they wish and those who have had criminal convictions for possession can now apply to have those convictions removed

What do you think? Good or bad idea ?

As it's traceable in the blood for some considerable time how will that effect people using machinery, car drivers, train and aircraft pilots
I can see many problems above the obvious

Great news. A little more momentum for the longer term. 40 years ago, there was a move to decriminalize pot, a move that died in the 80's and beyond during the public zealotry called the War on Drugs.

But, will the stuff on legal sale be just the mild stuff, with the stronger stuff still being pushed by criminal gangs?

California voters approve marijuana for recreational use.

Typically the stronger stuff (unless adulterated with other substances by the gangs) has always been the result of devoted cultivation by the real affectionados. Your run of the mill Mexican brick is pretty crap stuff.

I don't know enough about it to make an informed judgement! I guess like with smoking! Alchohol and even food there will be people who will use it for purely recreational reasons and those who will use it as an escape from their problems and like the others self abuse ?

Also I don't know but I read somewhere it remains in your bloodstream for up to 3 weeks ?
How would that work with intoxication by drugs driving a motor vehicle or other forms of transport if it cannot actually be proved like with blood tests or breathalysers with alcohol which leaves the blood quickly ?

Only in California will they legalize marijuana, while prohibiting cow farts. Yes, California has banned cow farts. Too much methane which causes global warming.

Follow the money, Ken.

Pot usage leads to increased sales of Doritos(TM) and Twinkies(TM), and other snack foods. Cow farts not so much.

That's too funny, but there's much truth in humour! Many years back, I lived for a while with a community of hippies in the US and, as a disinterested party, was able to see the not so positive effects of very regular use. I'm not referring to it being a gateway to harder drugs, but more the many daily effects that render one less able, rather than more. Medicinal oil and so on seem to have proven benefits for patients suffering from chronic conditions. Perhaps the money saved by the law enforcement services can be better spent on other worthy causes ?

Money spent by California law enforcement officers enforcing the (old) California pot laws? They haven't been enforcing them for at least a decade.

Then you should have voted for the condoms bill.

Only in lala land would you have ammunition, plastic bags, weed and condoms on the ballot.

It really beggars belief.

Shows what an unhealthy lifestyle some lead - it was always orange slices when I was younger, allegedly, so to speak, I heard someone say ...

I rather agree with Pace. I don't use the stuff and never have, Not because some power mad ass***es want to regulate my life but because, for me, it's stupid. I have known some people it doesn't seem to affect negatively and I have known some people it does. I judge myself to be in the latter camp. I don't know how you can calibrate people. I have certainly met some with whom I don't want to share the road while they're using.

After an excellent landing etc...

You forgot the bit where the 'British Empire' went to war with China twice (1839-1860) to ensure that British opium could be freely traded.

The War on Drugs does not achieve it's objectives. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Smoke, eat, drink, inject, whatever you want. The big problem with puffing weed is the same as smoking and diesel cars .. it stinks . By all means do it. But do it far away from everyone else
