How many could we fit in?

Just daydreaming in the office, all this hullabaloo about immigration etc… wondered if the UK could fit everyone in if the whole world decided to move here.

My fag packet calculation suggests, to me, a surprising result.

World population - 7.4 billion
Area of UK - 242,900 square kilometres or 242.9 billion square metres

We would each have a roomy 33 square metres!

Australia could offer a barmy 1013 square metres each!

I have heard it said that the entire global population could squeeze on the Isle of Wight standing shoulder to shoulder. That is when you start to appreciate how huge the planet is and how much an affect we have on it, even all spread out.

I had, for years, held the Dalai Lama in high regard, until...
A few years ago, he was visiting Oz to bestow his blessings upon all.
Fine, great, terrific, I thinks, until...

He stepped outside of his brief to make the observation that..
"Australia is such a big country. ... You have room for everybody here".

A bit of advice - Stick to what you're good at, mate.

John Brunner - "Stand on Zanzibar" - 1968.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stand_on_Zanzibar#Title

"The primary engine of the novel's story is overpopulation and its projected consequences,[2] and the title refers to an early twentieth-century claim that the world's population could fit onto the Isle of Wight – which has an area of 381 square kilometres (147 sq mi) – if they were all standing upright. Brunner remarked that the growing world population now required a larger island; the 3.5 billion people living in 1968 could stand together on the Isle of Man (area 572 square kilometres (221 sq mi)), while the 7 billion people who he (correctly) projected would be alive in 2010 would need to stand on Zanzibar (area 1,554 square kilometres (600 sq mi)).[4] Throughout the book, the image of the entire human race standing shoulder-to-shoulder on a small island is a metaphor for a crowded world....."
