Music Cover Versions

I started this earlier but on wrong forum so lets try again.

Planet Rock is currently playing a cover version of "Sound of Silence (Simon and Garfunkel) by Disturbed, which is excellent. The presenter (Wyatt) reckons this could be the best cover ever.

So, I thought it would be good to hear other opinions of covers. As a starter, I will throw in Kirsty Maccoll's version of The Kinks "Day".

I can think of a few others but would like to hear other thoughts.

If anyone mentions the Scissors Sisters desecration of "Comfortably Numb", I will ask the mods to ban them for life !!

Johnny Cash - Hurt.

Original by Nine Inch Nails. I think this was voted (BBC 6 Music?) as the best cover ever a few years back. With Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah in second place.

I preferred ZZ Top's version of Viva Las Vegas to Elvis Pelvis's original.

Always thought Ry Cooder's version of Blue Suede Shoes was a great cover.

Another vote for Johnny Cash Hurt btw.

Just goes to show how individual musical taste is !
Not trying to be contrary for the sake of it, but I happen to think that Sound of Silence cover is awful - overblown and pompous - and although when I first heard the Scissor Sisters version of Comfortably Numb, as a lifelong Floyd fan I hated it, I have since come to really like it in its own right.

One of my favourite cover versions is Joe Cockers "A little help from my friends", far better than the original in my ears, but I won't call for fans of the Beatles version to be banned here.

There are lots of covers that you probably didn't know.

Hendrix's Hey Joe and Manfred Mann's Blinded by the Light for starters.

One of my favourites is Joe Bonamassa's Sloe Gin.

Ant T, agree about Joe Cocker's version - great! As for Wet Wet Wet...

I really like the Matthews' Southern Comfort cover of Joni Mitchell's Woodstock.

Better go, I'm wasting valuable boozing time...

I agree with most of the above esp, Joey B's Sloe Gin and Joe Cocker. CSNY version of Woodstock great although never really saw what Neil Young brought to the party.

Still cannot agree about the Scissor Sisters - truly dreadful.

Metallica - Whisky In The Jar
Joe B - Sloe gin
Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Halestorm - Get Lucky

Not a massive fan of Disturbed by any means but I love the Sound of Silence.
Does covering your own song count? One by U2 didn't really do a lot for me but the version they did with Mary J Blige makes the hairs on my neck stand up

Robert Palmer - Bad Case of Loving You
Dave Edmunds - Queen of Hearts
Flying Pickets - Only You
Allison Krauss & Robert Plant - Killing the Blues

In the early days of Steeleye Span, they used to do a brilliant acapella version of Dylan's Lay Down Your Weary Tune. As far as I know, the only recorded version is on an Ashley Hutchings compilation called The Guv'nor - which also includes another terrific Dylan cover, Angelina.

Apologies to Willie Nelson and Elvis fans (and others) but I really prefer the Pet Shop Boys' version of Always on my Mind. Mind you when a song has been recorded by so many artists it's not clear who is covering whom.
