I expect it's trendy. So many things are these day. Can we still say trendy? Or has it fallen out of fashion?

It can't be that trendy or most of Southport beach would have been nicked by now......and heaven knows what they would have done, and what would be left , if anything, at Borth !

You could buy the multi coloured sand which came from the cliffs at Alum Bay on the Isle of Wight. It came in small test tubes or you could buy the test tube and fill it yourself. AFAIK this has been banned for safety and erosion reasons.

They were doing it last week at the tourist spot by the Needles.
Kids could fill up containers bigger then test tubes in layers using different colours.

I stand corrected.
Once filled the containers must be handled carefully otherwise the layers merge and you end up with... er... sand in a container.
Fareastdriver Did you enjoy your visit to the IoW?

Sadly this is what passes for a "beach" in Europe. And that ain't sand. It's gravel.

Just a few mile from there is Compton Bay, a beautiful sandy beach where I spent many a happy summer day.

That photo has clearly been photo-shopped and airbrushed !.....there are no hot dog / hamburger stalls, no signs saying " Ultimate / Total Beach Experience this way !! " and no litter !!!!!....and what about the position of the individual on top of the cliff .....where's the other half then !

And where's the Elfin Safety fence to stop people toppling off the precipice? Where are the towels on the beach, placed there by the German tourists who then disappeared for 3 hours to have breakfast?

Clearly a fake.

And the deck chairs. There are no deck chairs! And where are the middle-aged men with the knotted hankies on their heads paddling about with their pants rolled up to their knees?

That is the beauty of Compton, nothing commercial. There once was a shop, well a shack really, selling buckets and spades, crisps with the little blue packet of salt and ice cream. It fell off the cliff edge years ago due to erosion. It is a bit of an Islander's secret, "Don't tell the tourists, they'll mess it up." Actually the picture makes it look crowded, walk half a mile along towards the white cliffs and there's plenty of space and no rocky outcrops.
All National Trust around there, Freshwater Down and Tennyson Down poking out of the sea mist in the distance. Tennyson wrote, "if you could bottle the air at Freshwater, you could sell it for sixpence a pint in London."

My memory of Freshwater bay is skinny dipping there during the IoW festival in 1970 (along with hundreds of others). I'd told my parents that I was going youth hostelling with a friend. When I got home, a bit grubby and very hungry, my mother gave me a plate of beans on toast, then told me that Mrs Bathurst-Brown (our next door neighbour) had seen my naked bottom on the television news, so she knew full well that I'd been to a pop festival...

I never did find out quite how Mrs Bathurst-Brown knew it was my bottom she'd seen.

Bask all you like...but, when we go to the beach here in the UK and venture into the water, all we can die of is hypothermia....in contrast to which, you have every known predator / carnivore and venomous species on the planet.....well ok, almost, waiting for an a la carte meal to arrive !
