KenV. Calm down, dear. It's not about the US.
My point exactly, dear.

It's all fine really. They just need to change their name:

Valujet (Flew unsafe aircraft) to: AirTran

Philip Morris (Sued for killing smokers)to: Altria

Blackwater (Killing innocent people) to Academi

Arthur Anderson (Telling porkies about Enron) to : Accenture

See the link? They all begin with 'A'. My suggestion is to change the name from Volkswagen Audi Group (VAG) to Audi Volkswagen Group (AVG). I know that's an abbreviation for 'average' but it must be better than VAG...

That's VW's intended foray into F1 up the Swanee.

Edited to add: I think there is a real prospect that Volkswagen won't survive this no matter how many executives go. Widespread deception going, it would appear, to the top.

AVG, I think is the name of an antivirus software.
Regarding VW not surviving too early to tell since their lawyers and the German government have not tell their final word.

onetrack's post needs a re read, folks. The report his post refers to suggests that all manufacturers of diesel engines for cars have had to do something similar in order to pass the tests and get cars to markets, not just VW.

The law of unintended outcomes strikes again: by actually getting the data in an effort to promote what someone thinks is true, the data show that what is believed is not what was thought.

Not the first time this has ever happened.

Presumably the reason VAG were targetted is the size of their operation in the US compared to the sum they spend lobbying senators compared with say, GM (which includes Opel/Vauxhall)

Did you read the article, or not? Also suggest you read eticket's link. Cheating is old news, and the auto makers have been getting caught and fined since about 1970. Your assumption that somehow VW is getting explicitly worse treatment is the usual crap we have to put up with US bashers. It really gets tiresome, yes it does.
Let's seen, in 1972, Ford got caught and busted for 7 million dollar fine.
In 1974, VW gets caught and gets a 120 thousand dollar fine.
Obviously, the US has had their guns out for VW for ages ... oh, wait, maybe the facts don't support your attitude.

A better defence lawyer would have been George Karmann.

Given he's been dead 14 years, I'm guessing you're looking to the supernatural to save VW. It's going to take that. I'm with Strake, I think they've had it. Share price is going to be perfect for a takeover by the Japanese, USA or French auto conglomerates.

I quite like my VW as it is and will be jolly resentful if it's made to burn more fuel with a software mod which I don't want.

The Science Of Diesel Emissions Reduction - Diesel Power Magazine

The Nox reduction triad. Nox. Combine that with a DPF and you have a clean diesel engine.

When the software is turned off, V-dub's emissions are reportedly anything up to 40 times higher than the emissions limit. One has to wonder if other manufacturers are so much better? This may well be their straw to be grasped...that the rest of the industry will be found to be just as bent.
