It's quite comical that the entrenched nay-sayers refuse to accept there's a problem without so-called proof. I just hope that none of those individuals are religious.

It's not as comical as a group who expect the entire industry to alter without any proof......

No, I'm not religious for the same reason that I want to see evidence. I'm assuming you are...?

Silvertate, the packs / air cycle machines typically have air bearings so no oil used.

So what causes the thick blue smoke when a pack goes overtemp, as they often do (especially when warming from cold)? The hot pack is picking up and overheating an oil-based compound from somewhere, so where is it coming from and what are the hazards associated with this.

Fume events

Tourist, you want 'proof' ?

Do you not believe the considerable number of reported incidents of fume events whose symptoms exactly match those of classic organophosphate poisoning, the incident reports from the likes of the AAIB, a 'competent body' to be inadequate as 'proof'.

I'd just like to know. What kind of proof are you looking for ?

The proof of acute fume events is widespread, even recorded on camera phones. I admit that proving the effect of long term chronic exposure to lower levels of OPs will be trickier but examining the contents of the filters that DHL have apparently fitted at least to their 757s might prove instructive.

If fitting filters is all it needs to fix a problem, I hardly see any huge problem with that..

Does anyone have any more info on DHL's filter strategy ?

Unless you are genetically susceptible, and you are exposed to harmful toxins which you can be on a regular basis, and the consequences of that exposure was displayed on every can of jet engine oil, until the oil companies decided to remove it.

Well, you could find another occupation. Why would you deliberately expose yourself to something you believe to be harmful? Hoping for a big settlement?

When you have spent upwards of $100,000 to train to be a pilot, changing occupation is not the preferred option. In 2015 you expect your employer to provide a work place that is not going to expose you to a daily low level of Organophosphates. Asking a few thousand pilots worldwide to change their career choice is not the answer to this problem, especially with the upcoming shortage of pilots.

Maybe some of our more erudite posters could enlighten me, and others, as to why engine manufacturers spend huge amounts of time & money investigating and trying to eradicate negligible amounts of odour in the cabin bleed system.

Tourist, never assume anything.

Except, of course, the existence of aerotoxic syndrome....?

I doubt its oil, every ACM I've had out has had air bearings,4 different a/c types, have certainly seen smoke from cold start where deicing fluid or hydraulic fluid have been the culprit,it has typically found its way to the apu intake.

I chose flying as a career in my early twenties as it had been my dream from childhood. I hadn't heard of AS until I became ill with the symptoms, and was unaware that I was being subjected to the toxins in my workplace. Financially I am over a million pounds out of pocket. I have to live with permanent brain damage and constant pain in various parts of my body due to nerve damage. Things that those of us affected are campaigning for, is genetic testing before anyone chooses this career, and filters fitted to all aircraft. All very simple.

Ah, so you got "the symptoms"

What, exactly, are they?

Do you have to have all of them to qualify?

Can you pick and mix to ensure a decent payout?

Ignorance

The symptoms were listed in the 320 page BALPA document I posted some weeks ago.

It seems that tourist was too ignorant to read of them.

Ignorance is bliss!

When you say scientific evidence, do you mean the sort of scientific evidence that was presented to BALPA?
Do you have a link to this evidence? I must've missed it in amongst all the white noise here.
