There is nothing new under the sun.

Fred, don't get too wound up by this guy. We've never gone this far as with Trump in the White House, but we've gone off the rails many times before.

Liberal icon FDR tried, with perhaps the very best intentions, to pack the Supreme Court in order to ramrod his New Deal legislation. He failed in that but did get his way with the Court in the normal way by being able to name Justices because of attrition. Then there was the way that he got us into World War II on the side of Great Britain. As it happened, Nazi Germany declared war on us first, but FDR's policies had us going against the popular wish for us to stay out of the war in Europe.

It is not that what FDR was doing there necessarily was wrong, but he certainly was not coloring inside the lines in both cases.

NIxon was probably the other extreme to FDR when it came to rule-breaking, and perhaps more dangerous than Trump since he was much more wily and intelligent, but also just as crazy. To be a bit old-fashioned, I would call both Trump and Nixon evil.

The way we got rid of Nixon is down to one of those things you could not make up. The White House counsel provided very detailed information about conversations with John Dean, information meant to repudiate what Dean was telling investigators about what Nixon had got up to. The thing was, though, that this information was so highly detailed that it raised suspicions about how it was gathered. Was it from notes? No, no notes, according to Alexander Butterfield, aide to Haldeman. So, could it have been from tapes, what Dean had already suggested? Butterfield, sort of a straight arrow even though he was a pal of Haldeman's, confirmed the existence of a taping system in the White House, when it was the damning evidence from those tapes that finally sank Nixon. It is arguably so that if Butterfield had just clammed up, as Haldeman already had done, about the existence of those tapes then Nixon would have squeaked through the hearings and continued in power, probably locked into a drunken spiral of paranoia and abuse of power while Congress looked the other way.

Right now we have a vast heap of stuff to use against Trump, far, far more than we ever had to use against Nixon, so that it is hard to imagine that Trump is going to get away with everything he has done wrong, even though almost all Republicans back him.

One bad guy is less alarming than all these other not-so-bad guys who are just sitting on their hands doing nothing much about him. It's hard to imagine how the "Party of Lincoln" is going to come out of this one with its reputation intact. (Last time we only saw a few Republicans playing such a lap-dog role for Nixon, when the most prominent one, Representative Charles Sandman, Jr., of New Jersey, saw his political career finished for that. It will be interesting to see what sort of reckoning comes for his satraps once Trump is out of power.)

From chuks.

Erm...chuks. In the US, true power is not apparent. The more visible it is, the less actual power is present.

America is not run by the powerful.

It is run, completely, by the influential...

Knowing the difference allows one to not take Trump seriously. Or Obama, who took himself very seriously.

Indeed, the Elders of Zion are at work even as we speak ....

Con, you are making this far too complicated. At the moment the USA is being run by our 45th President, Donald John Trump. Things are very different there compared to how it was when Obama was running things.

If you want to see our affairs being run, "completely," by "Them," well, No! Sure, Hollywood, the MSM, the bankers, etc., etc. all have a hand in our affairs, but it's Trump who is running things right now. If it were "Them," then things would not have changed as much as they have, right?

Who needs this crazy sh*t, the way that Trump is carrying on? Not even Vladimir Putin needs this, I think; he was after disruption, not irrational chaos. Now he is faced with the threat from Trump of a new nuclear arms race, one Russia can not afford. Never mind the somewhat abstract threat of a holocaust, how about the very real threat of going bankrupt just as happened before with Russia trying to match Reagan's "Star Wars" initiative?

What is this, death by Twitter? Who ever heard of such a thing before Trump came along?

It's like a Captain swapping First Officers, when the flights are still carried out about the same, because FOs, even when they have control, are not making the ultimate decisions; the Captain makes those.

Part of the problem is that Trump might well be subject to corrupt influence from within or without the States, but it is still he who has the ultimate say in what goes on. That's the problem, I think: the irresponsible way Trump wields his great power.

I, like you, stand amazed that there is not the slighest demand for the truth. You would think that there would be a dissenter here or there but no.
Well Fred, for first the demand and then the truth to be spread far and wide you would have to have the cooperation of all aspects of the media and to them 'truth' is either a dirty word or completely unknown; rather in the same way it is to Mrs Clinton.

According to West Coast you can do what you like because the only thing that matters is whether you are raking it IN, of course.

Another one down on their financial luck, can I write you a check to help you along?

You can add Trumpís SCOTUS wins to my list of things I'm pretty darn happy about. Ruth is accident prone, isnít going to make it much longer, so another selection awaits.

Behind your snarkiness, do you realize I and many others in fire territory are already complelled by law to do as Trump suggests? I’ve literally raked my property of dead pine needles (took down a couple of trees for fire concerns as well) as they’d quickly catch fire from a blowing ember. Never did I think it would be a topic of euros, discussing that I have to rake the south forty.

BTW, found out last week, my cousin’s son will be heading to your neck of the woods soon to protect you from Ivan. Once again, you’re welcome.

No, just demonstrating my utter contempt for the sort of subhumans who clearly believe that life begins and ends with the chequebook. No wonder you have such a deep desire to get into Dirty Donald's underpants - you are very much two of a kind.

If you're that butthurt by it then perhaps you shouldn't wander the thread. Don't want to offend your delicate feelings.

He's welcome too, we're an including lot. Not that we feel overly threatened by Ivan, but like you we have politicians, and some of them like to build relations, for future reference you know. And seriously, I did rake and cut down bush and smaller trees in the forest surrounding our property.

If I was gay, I could do better than you, so you’re safe.

Anyway, if you think it’s all about the dollar bill, you’d be incorrect. You however choose to focus in on that aspect, not much I can do about that. I’ve in the past pointed out aspects of the administration that I like and dislike, but it starts with me being able to put food on the table, fund a retirement (13 yrs away), etc. Once those requirements are satisfied, it allows me to donate frequently like I do to veterans organizations, having a secure upper middle income means I pay taxes that among other things funds social programs to provide for others here and abroad.

A rising tide lifts all boats, but it starts at home. Ask Mr Maslow if you don’t believe me.

Okay West Coast, you hope that Ruth Bader Ginsburg dies it so that DJT can appoint another Conservative to the Supreme Court.

Why do you think a Conservative dominated Supreme Court would be best for America,
even if that would not seem to accord with the feelings of nearly half of all Americans?

Would you be happy if the Supreme Court was entirely made up of Conservatives and why?

You obviously loathe the Democratic Party and feel that it is bad for America.

What would you feel if the Dems somehow disappeared and the Republicans
had a quasi-permanent majority (apart from a few Independents)?
{which would be similar to the situation in South Africa and the USSR (now Russia)}

Do you believe that almost-total dominance of America by the
Republican party would be good for America? And if so, why?

curious Mac

I don’t wish anything bad to Ruth, but I’m a realist. Do you as a Doctor wish ill will towards one of your patients because you recognize they are in the later stages of their life?

Dont make assumptions about my feelings. The Democratic Party has many wings to it, some far left, others more mainstream. To offer an impossibly simple statement indicates a fundamental lack of understanding of the topic and makes your question unanswerable in its form. Are you talking about the radical left or the moderate Dems, all who fall under the umbrella of the Democratic Party?

SCOTUS entirely of conservatives, no. As a libertarian, my beliefs cross the spectrum and I wouldn't want a singular mindset running the show.

To your later questions, they aren’t plausible, so not worthy of discussion.
