Why is "eggshell blue" such a popular paint colour in NK?
British warships seem to have latched onto this in the past also.

Edit: No, not topcoat grey, I mean electrical consoles and bridge fittings etc.

North Korea called the activists "human scum" and said the distribution of the leaflets could cause "all-out war".
Just how many times has North Korea threaten "all-out war"?

A couple of million times by now.

Tap on the shoulder.

Tapee: swigs around, "what", boom, "oh shit, what do we do now?"
Generals: "stuf him with Swiss Cheese and say gout got him".

Judy O'Grady and the colonel's lady ...

I was sat at brekkie the other morning when I was startled to read of this fellow who still believes in East Germany. Well, he was the editor of Neues Deutschland, the official newspaper of the SED, the official party of the former East Germany, so that he would do that, I guess. 25 years on from the collapse of the DDR, he's still keeping the faith, unreformed, unmoved by any of the awkward facts that have come out about that rotten edifice.

In an interview in the local paper this fellow had an answer to each question, such as "What about the way that East Germany shot people trying to flee the country?" He was able to fire right back by saying that, well, people get shot on the US-Mexico border too, so that there's no real difference. Same thing for the notorious Stasi, that they are matched by the NSA and the CIA.

It's a real shame that the reporter did not think to ask him "Who started the Korean War?" I bet that we could have heard a big, booming echo.

The only time the fellow shut up, only for a second, was when the reporter told him that he could have been imprisoned for what he had said in criticism of the current German government. Then he said that, well, that was just an oral outburst; in print he was much more circumspect. There he left out the way that the Stasi spied on private exchanges too, not just published ones.

I think that when one spouts this sort of BS long enough, one comes to believe in it somehow. It's as if one becomes pinned in this alternate reality that one has created; to abandon it would mean losing a large part of the self.

We used to have the far-right John Birchers in the States with their Commies hiding under our beds, and now we have the far-left admirers of various pseudo-Communist regimes, but somehow their self-delusion seems to have put them close enough to hold hands, out on both fringes.

Anyway, it would be unfair to think that our Pyongyang correspondent is alone in what he thinks and writes here; he has at least one twin brother in modern Germany.

And now we know what happened...

South Korean spy agency claims Kim Jong-un had surgery | World news | The Guardian

The National Intelligence Service (NIS) told legislators that a foreign doctor operated on Kim in September or October to remove a cyst from his right ankle, according to Park Byeong-seok, an aide for the opposition lawmaker Shin Kyung-min.
What? NK doesn't have world's best doctors?

Pigboat, that should not come as any surprise as North Korea 'exports labour' to several countries and has been doing so for several decades.

Of course it does, because in a totalitarian regime the state owns the labor performed by its citizens and can export it. Slavery in the purest form.

North Korean diplomats are going all out to avoid condemnation in a United Nations resolution coming up for a vote today.
Ouch, this should give someone, here, a major headache. How to reconcile his allegiance to NK and UN. Oh, mine, oh mine!!

The riddle of the horrible haircut, solved!

It turns out to be the bog-standard Chinese haircut, just not quite as extreme as Li'l Kim's, with the shaved sides and the mop of hair on top.

We were just visiting China and Tibet, or as a prominent lanolin-scented gyroscope enthusiast might want to have it, the People's Republic of China and the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China, when several things caught my eye:

Red Flag limousines. Bwoah-ey! Priced at a million razoodocks or so, hand-built, looking like a Lincoln Continental Mk II got an improvised ass transplant from a big Merc. Just the thing for cruising down Beijing's main boulevard, crushing counter-revolutionary lickspittle capitalist lackey running dogs. When our man with the Maroon Monstrosity sees this, it will be Game Over for the Ford!

Bicycles. 3 or maybe 4. That was it! All sent to Pyongyang? Whatever. Instead: electric scooters and tri-shaws. Deadly, near-silent, no lights on at night so that they sneak up from behind and nearly run you over. Commies!

Cops. Lots and lots of cops. Fat cops, skinny cops, cops in black, cops in green, cops with lots of gold braid, some cops who looked like their mothers sent them out for Halloween in home-made cop costumes, but plenty of cops who looked as if they meant business. No pleasantries were swapped with the cops.

The weird haircut. About every third man below the age of 40 or so was wearing the Kim Jong Un. After a few days I got used to it, this look like a small dog was perched atop an Asiatic's bonce. Go figure ....
