Is that a question to or from the US?

Bet you feel clever now. Anyway, Europe would be in deep shit if the US nuclear umbrella didn’t protect it from the neighbor to the east.

The last thing the Russians need right now is to take over a continent full of communists.

Besides, do you really think Americans are eager to die in a nuclear fireball to protect Brussels from Putin?

I actually wonder if the NK despot will have the nerve or guts to leave NK in case someone takes advantage of his leaving.
Unlike his recent trip to China that was only known after his return all dates with POTUS will be known well in advance.

That could be fun.

Headlines:
"Kim returns to N. Korea after desultory talks with the US only to find himself locked out."

I chucked for a few minutes over that one liner.

Well, it looks as if the summit is back on. The sausage is being made. I think it is safe to say that there will be a lot of eyes on this. Can you imagine being on the protocol detail for this?

What I am finding noteworthy is that in today's photos it is Pompeo who is at Trump's side. Bolton is nowhere to be seen. Has his bad cop routine worked? Can he be trusted in public? Who knows! It just seems that from what tea leaves are visible that Pompeo is the lead on this...which since he is representing State that would be the case vice the NSA one would think.

Twelve days is a long time for Trump and Kim. Let's hope progress is made.

I think you can read Bolton and his absence in varying, contradictory ways.

My take, and a simple one it is:

If the talks go no where, the bad cop Bolton will assume a greater role and the sanctions and other coercive methods are ramped up. If the talks progress at a rate that satisfies Trump, Bolton stays on his hole.

Well Mr. Trump is en route to Singapore so it looks as if the meeting is a go. I hedge no secret that I think little of Mr. Trump but I wish him luck. NK is not only a nuclear threat, but perhaps equally as disruptive a cyber one as well and that pertains to all of us. This little country with it portly dictator can wreck havoc on, and in, the world. Let's hope something can be wrung out of this.

It seems that what Kim wants is to have his country be like China. One party, one lifetime ruler, etc.

I just hope that Trump does not throw the Japanese concerns under the bus. Don't make America First be America Alone...which seems to be the wish of many in the administration. Japan and SK (among other regional allies) have legitimate concerns re. NK so it will be noteworthy if they are at all folded into the decision making.

This is one set piece of political theatre over the past years is actually worth watching. It seems that anything can, and will, happen instead of being scripted down to sub-atomic detail. Let the games begin!

Given Trump's G7 performance, I expect little more than superficiality and some photo ops with strained, fake smiles all round or someone charging out.
Hope to be wrong.

I hope to be wrong as well. Of course if one were to ask my wife one would learn that I am often in this category.

I seriously shake my head at someone who thinks thorough preparation is not necessary. I doubly worry at milions in the U.S. who support such thinking and thatt someone would be proud of it.

Sorry, but the technical details of this situation are a bit more than the NYC real estate market. Very few people in life can just wing it at this level.

I understand what his supporters are saying in that he is there to break the logjam and get things moving--the staff will iron out the details. I don't buy this approach, but as I said, I certainly wish him luck for all of our sakes.

We're a long way from ironing out technical details regarding Korea. Right now we need to find out if Nork is willing to negotiate towards ending their nuclear program, or even toward reunification.

The methods used in the past 70 years haven't worked, and the Norks have simply played us out.

Like everyone else, I don't know if this approach can be a success. However, Trump has a better chance than any of his predecessors at cutting through the BS and finding out if the problem is solvable. His blustery bull-in-the-china-shop technique might just work where "prepared" and protocol dense meetings have not. Why don't we give it a chance?

Or could it be that DT would wish for the same thing himself? His Wikipedia entry suggests that he's been a member of many US political parties already ....

Xi Jinping may think he has glued his backside to the seat but there are too many movers and shakers in China to make it last.

The Fat One doesn't seem to trust the people looking after his IL 62. He came in an Air China 744.

But now if his well-fed happy citizens get the idea to revolt while he's away, he's left his getaway plane at home
