Which was what, exactly?

I find your post incoherent, Caco.

If you've got a bone to pick, put it out there clearly. I'd do the same for you.

Ben I guess I mean that you should put your money or your piloting skills where your mouth is and forget prejudice.

And you know, I trust you to do it because you are not only, clearly, a decent man but, also, a good pilot.

I look forward to meeting you sir. I am no more mad than I appear.

One day we'll be asked to 'fix' Hillbrow. Would be a lot easier to 'care' if I hadn't seen it before.

You disarm me, Caco. I thought I was picking a fight.

I have no prejudice, but I do have experience. I am an observer. And I come to conclusions, empirically. Is that bad?

The US, and its Constitution, was the world's best hope, including Africa. You knew that, didn't you?

Prejudice: "A biased opinion based upon insufficient knowledge"

Who is being prejudiced? Who do you know that has posted on this thread?

If you are referring to prejudice based on race, then by thinking Robert Mugabe, and many other African leaders are murdering, lying, thieving, a---holes makes me prejudiced then I would be proud of being prejudiced.

Who gives what to Africa

Temp Spike and a few others: thanks for your effort, because it is frightening to think about what would look like this thread without you guys...

Let's be reasonnable and no need to show too much hatress towards people who didn't have our chance for many reasons.

I consider the modern western democratic countries as the example to follow in the world, I really do, this is what I believe after having travelled and lived around the world.
As such we are an example to follow. As such we have responsabilities towards the human race on earth. No need to be naive to be responsible.

Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development also lists countries by the amount of money they give as a percentage of their gross national income Who gives how much in general and total (not only to Africa):
Quote:
1. Sweden – 1.45%
2. Norway – 1.06%
3. Luxembourg – 1.04%
4. Denmark – 0.88%
5. Netherlands – 0.82%
6. Belgium – 0.55%
7. Finland – 0.54%
8. Ireland – 0.54%
9. United Kingdom – 0.52%
10. France- 0.47%
11. Spain – 0.46%
12. Switzerland – 0.45%
13. Germany – 0.35%
14. Canada – 0.30%
15. Austria – 0.30%
16. Australia – 0.29%
17. New Zealand – 0.28%
18. Portugal – 0.23%
19. United States – 0.21%
20. Greece – 0.19%
21. Japan – 0.18%
22. Italy – 0.16%
23. South Korea – 0.10%
Interesting to note:
1-the 20 first are obviously western countries. (we still can see Japan and Korea in the list though...)
2-EU gives twice as much as the US.
3-Since this list has been written, UK stopped its aid to India (what makes sense to me...)

Now let's focus on Africa, which country give how much to Africa (USD million):

1- United States 7 763
2- EU institutions 5 443
3- IDA 5 196
4- France 4 187
5- United Kingdom 3 075
6- Germany 1 948
7- Global Fund 1 914
8- Japan 1 888
9- AfDF 1 760
10- Canada 1 532
Other donors- 13 226
Total 4 7 932 100%

Interesting to note: EU countries here again give twice as much as the US. They give 2 times to Africa, through EU institutions and through their own aid program for a total of around USD 15000 million against USD 7700 million for the US.

A lot more there: http://www.oecd.org/investment/aidst...s/42139250.pdf

Excellent KAG. I am happy to contribute.

Clearly, by your research, the United States is NOT the most generous nation on earth, but I've known that for a long time.

You might also note that we don't have the highest standard of living either.

We do have a large military though. Thirteen times more expensive than any other. My my, where has all that tax money gone?

Not the most generous, but not the less neither! US clearly belongs to the countries that help the most.
The Europeans are doing a huge effort (in fact most of the aid money comes from Europe) for Africa and the world development though, and this fact is most of the time unknown.

Yes hopefully. In EU we are 27 countries but only 2 countries (UK and France) are doing a real effort concerning the military, please understand that Germany, the richest country in EU, is not ready yet to play a major role with its army for obvious historical reasons. Give it some time.
You do have a point though, as western aid and/or army when it comes to Africa are more or less the same thing sometimes.

I thought it was obvious: I prefer the military power on the side of the civilized and democratic countries. Sorry if I am unclear in my comments.

Tell me "Beijing-Paris", I've never been to China. Just how civilized are the metropolitan Chinese?

I won't comment on China anymore, each time I do I have very limited access to internet for a few weeks, and no access for some time on the website I have done the comments. Maybe because I live in a village with no other foreigners around, probabely my internet activity is easier to monitor by some bored local police, I don't know. Probabely because I have been here for almost 10 years and my IP adress starts to be known (I don't post from an hotel or the like, but from my house)... Any guess is as goos as mine.
I am an expat pilot like many others, I am preparing my retirement in France, nothing more, nothing less, and I am not in China for political reasons, so I will avoid, as long as I am here, to comment and tell you what I really think.

I will still be posting on PPRuNe after my return in France though...

A canard famous most for it's repetition.

The list consists of governmental contributions, the majority of contributions from the USA are by other means, abetted by the Charitable Tax Deduction. The Americans count in the top 5 in the world in personal effort; and first in total:

Yes ORAC, nothing more than what I have already posted, EU still spends twice as much as the US.
You post the same numbers, and for whatever reason in the tone of your post I feel you want to argue... JB... Hamsterwheel habits die hard...

KAG, the EU isn't a nation, and charity giving is not centrally managed by Brussels........

Alright ORAC, wrong thread.

We are speaking about international aid, particularly to Africa, we are speaking about BILLIONS $$$$, not about some article from NBCnews speaking about charity, and the solid numbers accepted by the whole world have been already given, see above from the OECD link. You are off topic.

PLease, please, please don't bring the hamsterwheel madness spinning in circle argue here, this thread already has problems of its own.

Please don't turn that into a google contest.

I beg you (speaking about charity ).
