Eh Bro! We want our guns and blankets back

Historians rubbish claims of academic conspiracy - National - NZ Herald News

Alternative theories:

* a book, To the Ends of the Earth, written by Maxwell C Hill and Gary Cook, with shipwreck explorer Noel Hilliam, detailed evidence the authors said convinced them that Greek-Egyptians and others sailed to and settled New Zealand long before the arrival of Maori;

* it showed ancient maps detailing the coastlines of Australia and New Zealand and first drawn before the birth of Christ. Skeletons, rock carvings, stone buildings and monuments and oral tradition all attest to people of European origin living here for centuries before the arrival of Polynesians;

* another book, The Great Divide, by investigative journalist Ian Wishart, said New Zealand may have been settled by humans between 2000 and 14,000 years ago;

* but a massive comet strike that left a 20km wide crater with walls 150m high in the seabed near Stewart Island in the mid 1400s created a 220 metre high tsunami which swept up the coast, wiping out evidence of early human settlement, and was the most likely culprit in mass species extinction of moa, eagles and other animals around the same time;

* it said the early humans left South Island cave paintings featuring what scientists described as "crocodiles and pythons" - animals not known in Polynesia

In fact...keep the guns, blankets and taniwha (yeah right )...just pay back the taxpayer $xxbn that they have given in Treaty settlements

Much like the argument on just who 'discovered' the Americas first. I think this is the latest list.

Some unknown folks that walked across the ice from the European Continent. (No, not the folks that waked across the Bering land bridge, I think they were the first, but then they didn't know that they had discovered two new continents, they were just out for a stroll and just ended up on the American continents.)

The Irish, in little round boats.

The Spanish in little boats.

Before or after them, a Chinese Admiral that whose male bits had been chopped off.

Then of course there was Eric the Red that had settled on Greenland during the last AGW period. Rather careless of him to lose all those early SUVs that caused the last AGW period.

And the last was the guy that sail off the edge of the world and accidentally landed where he thought he was going, which of course it was not where he was going at all.

Now, did I leave anybody out?

Oh, and little green men from outer space don't count.

We always used to say if the Dutch had colonized NZ rather than the Poms, there wouldn't have been a Maori problem........

There you go...The Scottish discovered NZ

"If we believe our histories, then we as Maori are not the indigenous people of New Zealand."

Maori stories speak of his ancestors being greeted by a different culture when landing on New Zealand's shores and talk of red-headed, fair-skinned people, he said.

"Who were those people who greeted our wakas and red-headed, fair-skinned people?

You left out Prince Madoc, Welsh explorer and alleged founder of the Mandan tribe of " Indians". I think there is a memorial to him at Mobile, Al.

Oh, and Seasons Greetings.

And don't forget the Knights Templar and their supposed hidden treasure which was shipped off west to the Americas, and the (claimed related) uncertainty over the origins of the Melungeons

To King William, The Gracious Chief of England.
King William
To King William, the gracious Chief of England. King William, we, the chiefs of New Zealand assembled at this place, called the Kerikeri, write to thee, for we hear that thou art the great chief of the other side of the water, since the many ships which come to our land are from thee. We are a people without possessions. We have nothing but timber, flax, pork and potatoes. We sell these things however to your people; then we see property of the Europeans. It is only thy land, which is liberal towards us. From thee also come the missionaries who teach us to believe on Jehovah God and on Jesus Christ His Son. We have heard that the tribe of Marian [the French] is at hand, coming to take away our land. Therefore we pray thee to become our friend and the guardian of these islands, lest the teasing of other tribes should come near us, and lest strangers should come and take away our land. And if any of thy people should be troublesome and vicious towards us we pray thee to be angry with them that they may be obedient, lest the anger of the people of this land fall upon them. This letter is from us, the chief’s of the natives of New Zealand.
(Signed) William Yate,

Secretary to the Church Mission Society, New Zealand.

Wererahi Chief of Paroa.
Rewa Chief of Waimate
Patuone & Nene Two brothers, Chiefs of Hokianga
Kekeao Chief of Ahuahu
Titore Chief of Kororarika
Tamoranaga Chief of Taiamai
Ripe Chief of Mapere
Hara Chief of Ohaiawa
Atuahaere Chief of Kaikohe
Moetara Chief of Pakanai
Matangi Chief of Waima
Taunai Chief of Hutakuta The tribe of Marion being the French. Marion De Fresne and 25 of his crew were slaughtered because they apparently were catching fish in a Tapu area. The French did not turn the other cheek, they came ashore and took revenge in a manner that the maori tribes readily understood, and were not keen to see the French return

The main problem is all of the lawyers and others who have made a full time job of creating unrest and in the process gaining lots of taxpayers money for themselves. It also seems to me that not all Treaty settlement monies actually drop down through all levels to benefit as many as it perhaps should.

Indeed - the strange thing is that written Maori was devised by Dr. Samuel Lee of Cambridge University and the chief Hongi Hika in c. 1820. One would have thought that the translation of the treaty in 1840 from English to Maori, and back again, should have been seamless... ho hum.
