Airey

Agree.

I notice Shorten in todays newspapers said that it is a joint problem !!!
I am sure he doesn't want to highlight the fact that it was on
Labors watch that it occurred.

At least Julie Bishop doesn't open here mouth an sprout BS blaming Abbott like Carr did the other day when it was Labor who did it

Fliegenmong
We can never be as biased as the ABC !

The head of the ABC should be sacked this morning. How can he claim that leaking of wage details of ABC presenters is not acceptable, but the leaking of stolen documents, the timing of which was designed to damage the Government, acceptable?

He should be sacked, and a AFP investigation should be commenced as soon as possible.

Just happened to turn on Sunrise on Ch 7.

Alan Jones and the other commentator were lashing the ABC and the "Left",
the reasons they have done what they did and how it is so against the National Interest as well as praising how Abbott has handled it by not blowing it out
of all proportion.

With negative responses to the delayed release of the Indon spying story, and Mark Scott's hypocritical whining about the leaking of his underworked stars' salaries, not to mention the fully-funded behemoth's potential to dominate the for-profit media, we must be getting close to a full review of the ABC.

It will be a hard nut to crack though. The ABC will dig in, and they and the Left press will howl like banshees. I wonder if Abbott will have a go?

Abbott should apologise to the Indonesians.
Prime Minister Abbott, now caught out in the infamous time travel spying saga, should immediately go cap in hand to the Indonesian Government, sending this group of people to apologise.

Ex PM Kevin Rudd, ex Foreign Minister Stephen Smith, ex Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon, and his replacement, ex Defence Minister John Faulkner, and ex Foreign Minister Bob Carr.

Money could be saved on the return airfares, as at the same time this apology is being delivered Kevin Rudd can present his papers as the new Ambassador to Indonesia.
From post #8 @ Jo Nova where bitching about the current state of the ABC is in full flight.

It's very good . I don't have a lot of time for Pickering's column but IMO he's still one of the country's best political cartoonists.
...not to mention the fully-funded behemoth's potential to dominate the for-profit media
They don't though, except maybe in children's telivision and the occasional popular comedy. IMO it's because they're extremely amateur (Q&A is a joke, even if you're a lefty) and their political shows only appeal to a small section of the market, ie inner-city trendies. They're consistently outrated by 60 minutes, Sunday and the morning news gobfests on 7 and 9.
Ratings | TV Tonight
Their news broadcast (not any of their current affairs shows) features once .

A review wouldn't hurt (particularly given its public funding), but I think you guys are over-reacting wrt the ABC's ability to change public opinion. I also think the left over-reacts wrt Alan Jones et al. From what I hear and see, Alan Jones and the ABC are generally only watched/listened to by people who already agree with the tone. I don't think either of them actually sway many opinions.

Good point about the media preaching to the converted, Worrals. When did you get so wise?

I'm not wise at all , but many years ago I worked in the entertainment industry. Rule number one was give the punters what they want. Whether it was a strip show, an opera, an avant garde Greek tragedy or a big hair metal act (it was a few years ago ) the rule didn't change; make sure your act is at least 90% what the paying audience expect it to be. Otherwise they get cranky.

Now news has become entertainment I assume the same rule applies. Therefore, AJ will keep slagging off lefties, the ABC will keep slagging off Tories, we'll all tune in to our Gob of Choice and get our regular dose of self affirming political 'news,' thatmost of the time is really more about reassuring us that the world is still functioning the way we expect it to than about the actual political issues.

Occasionally we'll watch the alternative and enjoy ourselves by getting annoyed at it (which we ALL do ). This is also self affirmation, because it re-enforces our inner belief that the Other Side are all a bunch of clueless [email protected]

As far as truly influential TV commentators go, I don't know how many there are. Koch would probably be up there; he's memorable and I think people trust him, even if they think he's a knob. Everyone else is either clearly partisan in one direction (and I think audiences spot this very quickly) or seems to fade into the background.

"As far as truly influential TV commentators go, I don't know how many there are."

Interesting point.

Think back 10, 20 years and who was on the TV then.

Carlton ?
Jana Wendt
Ray, the one everyone loved but he could needle someone if he wanted.
and a few others.

Now what ?
A breakfast TV presenter.

Sometimes the real wisdom can only be found in the bar of the local pub.....

A bloke last night reckoned the best option for TA would be to appoint Clive Whatshisname as Minister for Indonesian Reconciliation and send him up there to sort things out.

Might solve two problems at the one time ....

Worrals ..... if Koch is a knob then according to what you wrote earlier on in your piece then any who listen to him must be knobs also.
If that is what you meant then I fully agree with you.

500 N .... I think channel 9 is grooming Lisa Wilkinson to be the next Jana whoever.
This morning she was "interviewing" Pyne and Plibeshriek about the tapping business. After asking the usual inane questions she then asked Pyne if ,"the Australian Government was tapping the phones of any other foreign government".
'Oh yes, Lisa, indeed we are, and here's a list of them you effin' Muppett '.
After I'd stopped laughing I switched over to the A.B.C. ..... to watch ' In the Night Garden' and then 'Peppa Pig'.
It was lot more cerebral than Sunrise etc.

An excellent example of the Kochie/Sunrise influence is the Prime Minister with the highest popularity rating of all recent PM's - the one and only Kevni.

I have no problem with the partisanship of commercial media outlets. As Worral's says, they play to their audience and you know what you're getting.

But I do have a problem with the publicly funded institutions pushing partisan agendas; even more so when they are competing with and pushing out of the market, commercial operations.

The ABC should be the fulcrum balancing Murdoch/Pickering/Smith and the Fairfax/Guardian/Crikey push; not the propaganda unit for one particular political group.

Don't hear much from the foreign minister, her last comments on spying methods related to Israel stealing Aussie passports to murder a target in Dubai, " well we all do it" apparently,
Maybe it's best she keeps her mouth shut!

She did comment on the previous issue though.
