What on earth has happened to Williams?

Without doubt the best race in last few years, a new star was borne, Gasly drove an impeccable race to 4th, Ericsson brought Sauber out of the shadows and Vettel drove his Ferrari to a well deserved victory.

Was Max the victim of his own impatiance - or was it an unfortunate racing incident (that maybe he should have avoided)?
Once again, Mercedes failed to consider the what maybe and were outwitted by Ferrari.
IMO, Mercedes put too much store on SV's tyres crashing.
Were VB and LH 'flat out'? or were Mercedes being cautious about wearing out one of their engine allocation?

I don't think that's entirely fair. I think switching VB to a 1-stop was a good call and left Ferrari with little choice to leave Seb out on deteriorating tyres. I think if it had been Hamilton rather than Bottas in pursuit it would have worked.

The Honda engines seem to have done wonders for Torro Rosso. I don't think they've had an engine failure yet? Don't know what magic they performed with the new front wing but it gained them seconds. Unheard of. Hartley would have done better if he hadn't hit a bird in qualifying and then damaging the car in the race. Torro Rosso might be worth watching this year...

During the race, Gasly retired with an engine failure while his teammate ran a quiet race to finish 15th as the last car running at the flag,

"If one guy is getting injured, it is bad for us," he said, after briefly delaying his mandatory television interviews to ask the team about Cigorini's condition, for which he had to ask for permission from a representative of F1 management.

Great race, really enjoyed it.
Best performances of the weekend
1. Pierre Gasly - drove perfectly all weekend, and crowned the achivement with a well-deserved 4th place.
2. Magnus Ericcson - drove the slowest car on the grid to his first point scoring finish in 50 races.
3. Sebastian Vettel - perfect qualifying session, perfectly executed race strategy and made the mediums last just enough to fend off Bottas
4. Kevin Magnussen - same words as for Sebastian, proved once again that both he and the Haas has the speed to fight just below the top-3 teams
Worst performers
1. Max Verstappen - drove like an idiot all weekend, lost his cool (again) and had to retire through no faults other than his own
2. Mercedes - seem to suffer from illusions they're still top of the game with daylight between them and the Ferrari / RBR challengers
Highlight
Vettel answering the inane question put to Hamilton at the press conference. Came to the immediate defence of his competitor, nailing the idiotic Dutch reporter well and truly to the floor. Well done Seb!

Here's a text version of what Vettel said. Good for him. A good answer.

Ah cheers redsnail, yeah I think Vettel is right.
Heat of the moment and cameras in their face when they're coming down off an adrenaline high. Until a couple of years ago we never saw in there, it's a couple of minutes for them to wind down after the race before going straight into the podium then the interviews and media pen. Personally think they shouldn't have to put up with cameras in their face there.
Having said that, and I'm by no means a prude when it comes to swearing, but I don't agree with all the swearing that some of the younger drivers seem to do all the time. They're doing it in English too, which means in the heat of the moment they're having to think about what they're saying before it comes out. If they were swearing in their native language that's one thing, but to consciously translate for effect is not good. I guess it is just another example of bad examples to younger kids watching all the sports.
It's particularly bad in football, because they allowed it to go unpunished. It virtually never happens in rugby, because they just wouldn't stand for that sort of lack of respect. Maybe the FIA needs to fine drivers every time they swear over the radio or in an interview to make a point and stamp it out.
But also don't put a camera in their face just after they get out the car and emotions are still running high.
