As Lon More said, there were a hell of a lot of razor sharp shards of front wing all over the track and it takes time and (having witnessed it) bravery on the part of the marshals to clear it all. Saw several marshals dodging F1 cars (behind the safety car) whilst trying to clear the track of a lot of debris after a major coming-together.

Well done by Lewis, and some kudos to Nico for handling his problems with some grace. Nice finish for the Red Bull guys as well (Vettel must be relieved to finally finish in front of his teammate ). Eight laps did seem a little extreme, but that wing absolutely exploded when it went, so I'm sure it took a while to locate and collect all the bits.

Idiots at NBC Sports broke for commercial during the podium ceremony . At least the came back in time for the drivers interviews.

It's dangerous enough for the marshals who do an excellent job. At the 2001 Australian Grand Prix track marshal Graham Beveridge was fatally injured when he was struck by a fast-moving wheel from Villeneuve's car that had passed through a gap in the safety fence. The race was not halted, but the safety car was rapidly deployed and was out for 10 laps whilst medics attended to Beveridge. He was moved to the hospital, where he was declared dead.
In 2013 one died at the Canadian Grand Prix when he was run over by a recovery truck.
IIRC one was killed at Kylami in the 1970s
Undoubtedly many more incidents outside F1

I can still see the images, horrific. The driver, Tom Pryce, was killed too.

Early 1977, but marshalling from that era bares a poor comparison with today. I was involved in photography (and some marshall training as a trainee) at Kyalami in that era, and was at the track the day Peter Revson died (1974) and when Tom Pryce and the marshall Frederick Jansen van Vuuren died (1977). Safety gear was minimal in the early 70's, although designated fire marshalls were better protected than most. Even pit crew wore shorts and T-shirts. It changed rapidly from then on.

Tom Pryce

I was surprised to happen upon Tom Pryce's grave in a sleepy, genteel graveyard near Otford in Kent last year. To my knowledge Pryce was the only Welsh driver to have won a F1 race and fully expected that he would have been laid to rest in Ruthin but nonetheless he has been honoured by his home town.

enough attention to theological aspects? Do they have reverend gentlemen present to bless engines, gearboxes, steering wheels and whatever? What gods have influence and just how should they be appeased and propitiated? Should drivers do better after genuflection in the appropriate direction? Please, Keef and others, can you throw light on these arcane issues....
A kind of God of the laps you mean... that truly is an ecumenical matter!

Have heard whispers the majority of F1 artists subscribe to Lord Stig as their preferred deity. Sans the red team from Maranello, who's got a special deal with the boss of Peters church.

Just been talking to a friend of a friend. Says Michael Schumacher currently has 24 medical staff working on him / caring for him, including some doctors who used to work at the hospital he was in last. All in a large custom-built nursing facility that's now adjoined to his house. And quite right too: what else is wealth for when you need it ?

I was told how much it was costing, but won't repeat it here. Whatever, it is his money being spent on him.

Unlike his father who is a bully (broke a carting competitor's skull) and a wife beater (allegedly).

Classy Dutch guy!
