Apparently, the pumps being used to supply seawater to the 'third' reactor were damaged in the second explosion . . .

Fox News now reporting that there are witnesses saying there was just an explosion at the #2 reactor.

Just confirmed by Government. NHK not optimistic. Talking about worst case.

EDIT: Backing off this next statement on the news now . Possible damage to containment vessel.

I'm still hoping they pull this off. Think I'll turn off the news.

Just heard on the BBC news, two minutes ago, that there has been a third explosion at Fukushima. Unconfirmed though I might add.
Edit: Ok 11Fan.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel:-
"If a highly developed country like Japan, with high safety standards and norms, cannot prevent the consequences for nuclear power of an earthquake and a tsunami, then this has consequences for the whole world."

It's called Mis-Management flapsforty. And is being apparently being demonstrated as I type. Sounds like little in the plan for prudent emergency reaction.
Far less than on an in-flight aircraft.

This BBC report seems understandable to a total ignoramus of the science. How correct it is i have no idea.

This is what a nuclear meltdown of a reactor looks like. Just "blowing off a bit of steam",

A meltdown mushroom cloud.

Yeah, perhaps like that, perhaps like cooking a closed tin of beans over a campfire.

More ill thought-out and ill informed posts!

A plea to try and raise the level of discussion and understanding.

When making statements, like: "Explosion at Unit 2, some staff evacuated from site as a precaution. Jeez, this isn't looking good at all" and "Apparently, the pumps being used to supply seawater to the 'third' reactor were damaged in the second explosion . . " can you please post a link to your source so we can assess the veracity of the statement and it's implications.

What does this sort of post add to the discussion:
"AFP News Agency reporting 'serious radiation leak' . . ." and
"I wonder if TEPCO have anyone left who has any idea what to do next?"

If you have such a need to see your comments in print, start your blog, don't contaminate this space, please

My source is the BBC who are broadcasting statements being made by TEPCO at a Press conference and interviews with a professor of nuclear engineering from Manchester University.
Such information isn't yet 'on the internet', so it isn't possible to provide links for you to verify that such statements are 'genuine'.

Noise, and taking space

Thanks 22degHalo, but I do already follow breaking news through my sources, including streaming news, but that is another useful link.

@G-CPTN As regards repeating snippets of live TV - your selective posting of extracts and snippets is possibly of great interest to you, but these incomplete and unattributed snippets are just noise here. As I said - start your own blog, then you can post what you like. If it's interesting, people will follow you. Either way, we are saved from your edited and incomplete snippets. Or become a Twit(ter) and you can broadcast your noise to the world. Again, you'll find the true relevance of your tweets/information by the lack of followers.

The two (presumably legitimate sites) I have been using have not been updated with the recent events at Reactor #2.

HuntandFish,

All threads that cover events which stimulate high emotion go through this and self moderation generally keeps the BS to a reasonable level. If not, the Mods step in. Frankly, by comparison to some of the threads I've seen in R&N, this one is pretty civil and informative.

It is humorous of course!!

Which is of course is sad considering what is going on there and in the rest of the country. Keeping in mind there are brave people risking there lives to try and keep control of the situation and minimize any potential damage.

I'm just thankful that Ken started this thread so the issue and responses doesn't sully the main more sombre one.
