Yep, it's Rorke's Drift in KZN, it's bugger all like the film set. I spent a memorable day there.
Somewhat related, the South Wales Borderers Museum in Brecon is well worth a visit, they have a couple of the VCs won on display there.

WAG guess
doesn't look like the movie at all, almost all the movie shots looked up the hill, not down the hill.

Yep N, it's certainly not in the shadow of the Drakensberg as one is lead to believe.
The foundations of the original buildings are still there as well as the graveyard where many of those killed were laid to rest. There's also a small museum, I believe that the curator (who was very accommodating) was murdered a few years ago.
There's a school on the site (or there was when I visited in '95)
A relatively easy place to defend for about 300° but there is a hill taking up the remaining arcs that would have been a nightmare to defend.

absolutely no ocean swell, no waves, no ripples on the water and no detritus washing up on the shore.
yet large enough for a sizeable ship.
that has got to be the end of a big lake.
lots of pine trees.
deciduous trees in the town turning red.
no traffic lights.
lots of boats moored around the shore.
is that somewhere in canada?
