Airports could be ordered to pool snow clearing equipment

UK airports could be ordered to pool snow clearing equipment and de-icer under plans being considered by the Government, the Telegraph reports. The Department for Transport is determined to avoid a repetition of the last month's chaos that saw hundreds of flights grounded at Heathrow and the Christmas travel plans of hundreds of thousands of passengers thrown into disarray.

Earlier this week Theresa Villiers told major airport operators that they must act to make sure that another period of cold weather does not bring aviation to a halt. She said: ‘While the weather was severe, it is clear that the industry needs to be better prepared. One of the things we are discussing is whether we should create a stockpile of de-icer in the future. Once it gets cold prices go up and it does become harder to get hold of.’

The newspaper also reports that Ms Villiers has instructed the airports' ‘resilience sub group’ to examine how a pooling arrangement might work. It is understood ministers believe there is no justification for equipment and de-icer being left unused in one part of the country, when other airports are struggling to cope.

The Government also believes greater emphasis is needed to make sure that links to airports are also clear. Ms Villiers said: ‘There is little point in having an airport open if passengers cannot get in or out.'

So when the road, rail, etc. network is brought to a standstill by snow how do they plan to move this 'pool' of equipment, let us say, from BHX to EDI?

During a period of December I couldn't even get a vehicle out of the road I reside in, if Ms Theresa Villiers has the means to overcome this then I'm all ears!

Blithering Idiots!

So, imagine the scene.

Dft HQ. Chief civil Servant aka Chinless Wonder is heading up their Winter Resliance Team.

Yes, ok we'll send the enitire snow clearing fleet from MAN, BHX, EMA, LBA, LPL, CWL and BRS to LGW and LHR.

Minor Civil Servant - Sir, that's 50 bits of kit. How do we do this?

Chinless Wonder - Ok, Giles, order 50 low-loaders, pronto.

Minor Civil Servant - And who will we get to drive them sir?

Chinless Wonder - Drivers? You mean they've got to have drivers?

Damn. I supposed that they'll need putting up in all of the hotels that are fully booked. That is if we can get them here through the snow. What's that? Paying? you mean that they want paying?

And what did you say? BHX are saying that you can bugger off - it's our kit and we've payed for it and we're keeping it at our place??

And what do you mean that they've not got the same radio frequencies in their machines that they need to operate at LHR? Surely that can't be too much of an issue?

Security passes?? Oh, this is becoming stupid.

Oh, snow forecast at Glasgow too? Bugger Glasgow. Indeed, bugger everywhere. The SE is the priority.

Get me the minister!!!

One where avoiding telling the truth is the norm and where making fraudulent expense claims is considered acceptable. I will now retire and leave you to draw you own conclusions

Surely if you they drive from Manchester to Heathrow they can clear the motorway on their way down, do the job and drive back up the other side. Then back again as the snow just might of come down again just as they return to Manchester.

Or perhaps we could get some help from France!

P.S just thought we could send a lad down with a spade from Durham Tees Valley.

Not forgetting the need to drain all the red diesel from their tanks and put road fuel in if they are to drive on the public highway !

Don't worry on that count - 'big society' an' all - they'll probably pay for accommodation as well, the sheer joy of knowing they are doing Uncle Dave's will!

That's it in a nutshell, due to the population density, the business density and of course the huge number of passengers using the airports in the SE, it will be ever thus.

Ms. Villiers is one of a long line of people put into political positions that they have next to no knowlege of. I wrote to her last year when she was dripping on about F.C.C. running few trains on a Sunday because of a shortage of drivers. Her reply (via a minion) was a breathtaking display of ignorance and F.C.C. management supplied bullsh1t.

to the population density
and the densest of the population is occupying the front row of the government benches in the Jouse of Commons.

BTW moving the equipment round the UK should be no problem. Just base them at Boris the Nutter's new island airfield in the Thames and Britain's Merchant Navy can ship them round as desired.
