Airborne, I hope you recall (as demonstrated not long ago) that the presidency is not won by the popular vote, but rather by the totting up of electoral college votes.

This election, as is often the case, hinges on a few borderline states, not the adding up of California and New York.

Remember this from 2009?

Clint was right. We gotta let him go.

On the night of the election, wonder how long it will be before we hear Donald Trump come out and say this to President Obama:

But the figures for the "popular vote", in other words the actual figures of who voted for who, do get published (Obama 52.92%, McCain 45.66% in 2008, see page 2) so that would seem to me to be a fair bet with the proceeds doing some good.

Ok, I have been reading this whole post, and as an outsider have stayed out.

But now, I have some questions. And as I say I am in Australia,so whoever wins does not concern me)

OK, why dont you want health care for everyone? We have a Medi Care system in Australia, that may be not perfect, but at least if you can not afford Private Health Care< also available as an option, you can choose government healthcare..called MediCare..payed thru taxes and available to everyone. For example..if you are hit by a bus you will be taken to emergency, operated on, and have a stay in hospital, when you leave you can see a doctor, get drugs and recover, for none or little cost.

Australia continues to create jobs.....our unemployment rate is at an all time low...but we still tax so we can provide the old, disabled, less priveleged and so on constant goverment help.....not for a few months, but as long as it takes.Mr Romney last night talked of his family...but has he ever known of a family with nowhere to sleep? In Australia, under any government there would be a social housing programme to help them.

As for pro joice/ no choice I am noy going to even start, as this is not even a issue in Australia

What I know, is that polotics and feeligs are very different in the USA, and that I respect, so if I can get some sesibile answers it would be appreciated.

SOPS,

Thank you for your interest, and one of us will circle back around to it. I'm just popping in to post a quick something and then back to work.

An emotionally rattled Barack Obama, who insisted he was not watching the convention, quipped on Twitter Thursday night, "This seat's taken," following Clint Eastwood's humorous empty seat skit at the GOP Convention in Tampa, adding a photo:

I'm aware of the electoral college but am fairly confident that it will not conflict with the popular vote. If the situation were to occur I'm sure that RGB and myself are big enough men to ensure that the charity doesn't suffer...

SOPS,

When we had our financial crash in 2007-8....how did Oz fare?

The US stock market dropped from the mid 13,000's to the mid 6,000's....which was a huge loss to investors. At the same time....Home Values crashed....wiping out any equity homeowners had.

At the same time Bond Values plummeted.

Banks quit lending.

Banks went bankrupt.

The Home Building Industry crashed.

The Auto Industry crashed.

The Airlines crashed.

Government spending soared.

The Government deficit and national debt soared.

Business contracted, unemployment soared.

Obama and the Liberal Democrats undertook to "reform' Health Insurance....not health care....against the direct disappoval of the American People.

Now to answer your question.

Who is not for health care for everyone? No one is "against" that....absolutely no one.

What Conservatives do that pisses off the Liberals is ask that horrible question...."How do we pay for it?"

The government borrows 40% of everything it spends.

The government has spent us broke...skint...bankrupt really if you consider all of the unfunded liabilities....somewhere about 85 Trillion Dollars worth.

They admit to a public debt (ignoring the unfunded obligations) of 16 Trillion dollars.

What is the Oz National debt as a percentage of GDP?

What is the unfunded liability of the Oz government?

Do some compare and contrast for us will you? Add a bit of light to the question and lets see how you folks in Oz and us here in the USA compare to our Government spending habits.

Also....google a bit about the Affordable Housing Act, the role the Democrats had in the forcing of banks to grant Subprime Loans to minorities. Also google a bit about "Interest Only Loans" out in California and Nevada.

Then google a bit about Mortgage backed Securities, and Derivatives and how the Sellers bundled bad mortgages in with good debt and sold them to Buyers who did not do their due diligence. Remembering the Sellers had to take on bad debt because of the Government (think Democrats here) forcing them to do so. They had to find a way to shed themselves of that debt.

There lies the crux of our situation today.

Instead of the hokey assed Obamacare deal.....we should reformed Health Care and done so in a business like way.....gotten the government (State and Federal) out of the insurance business and let the competitive open market do its thing. Healthcare in this country has been so muddled up by both State and Federal politicians.....it has all but destroyed the system.

Obamacare is not the fix or cure....it is just the latest blunder by the government to control something it has no business being involved in.

One man's opinion anyway!

Perhaps, but you pretty well nailed it.

Also SOPS, I have a suspicion that our total taxes, not just Federal, but local and state as well, is much likely to be just as high as your's are, when everything is added up.

I would not be surprised that your's is lower as compared to ours and we don't have a national health care system that we are paying for.

Each State has what is called an Insurance Commission, with an elected Insurance Commissioner. It is this elected official that makes the decision as which health insurance company is allowed to sell insurance in their respective State. Actually for all types of insurance, not just health.

That is something Republicans want to change, allowing all insurance companies to compete for business, which would allow a healthy, competitive business atmosphere which would force prices down.

Also for the poor, there is a government health plan called Medicaid, which is free.

to all...Romney is the obvious best choice for President of the USA. (IMHO).

To those from the lands below the equator...I am supremely proud of our alliance, particularly in the Battle of the Coral Sea.

You might find it interesting to note that the US Navy HAD a ship named after Canberra.( to honor the gallantry of the men of HMAS Canberra) You might find it interesting that we have a US Navy ship named after Winston Churchil that has an active duty Royal Navy officer serving aboard as navigation officer.

You might find it interesting to note that President Obama wants to shrink our navy to the size it was before WW1.

AS to health care...even before Obama care anyone could walk into a US hospital emergency room and receive care regardless of ability to pay. It is a complicated issue to be sure. Wouldnt it be wonderful to give everything to everyone? But how do you pay for it? Even if EVERY Millionaire in the country gave up ALL their wealth, it would only run our country for about a month...and then what?

I hope Australia and the US are friends forever...we demonstrated our unity of purpose at the Battle of the Coral Sea and others.

but we are a bit different in some ways...

Speaking of M Squared,

In an appearance on The Huffington Postís webcast on Thursday, filmmaker Michael Moore revealed that he is less-than optimistic about President Barack Obamaís chances against Mitt Romney.

I had the pleasure of setting up a trip to Townsville, QLD to deliver an anchor off the USS Coral Sea carrier (CV 41). Didn't fly the trip, but crew had an AWESOME time, the welcome from arrival to departure was heartwarming.

Anchor is now a monument to the battle and US/Australian cooperation.
