What does it mean to become an American?

In the words of Quang Nguyen....who came here at the age of 13 with nothing but Hope.

If only our Kids could have such love for this country!

"This Saturday, the 24th, at 6:30 pm, the town of Prescott Valley, AZ will be hosting a Freedom Rally. I was asked to speak for 10 minutes on my experience of coming to America and what it means.
I wrote this in dedication to all Vietnam Veterans and I feel that it is important for me to share it with you prior to the Saturday event. Here it is and God Bless you my friend.
35 years ago, if you were to tell me that I am going to stand up here speaking to a couple thousand patriots, in English, I'd laugh at you. Man, every morning I wake up thanking God for putting me and my family in the greatest country on earth.I just want you all to know that the American dream does exist and I am living the American dream.

I was asked to speak to you about my experience as a first generation Vietnamese American, but I rather speak to you as an American. If you hadn't noticed, I am not white and I feel pretty comfortable with my people.I am a proud US citizen and here is my proof. It took me 8 years to get it, waiting in endless lines, but I got it and I am very proud of it. Guess what, I did it legally and it ain't from the state of Hawaii.I still remember the images of the Tet offensive in 1968, I was six years old. Now you might want to question how a 6-year-old boy could remember anything. Trust me, those images can never be erased. I can't even imagine what it was like for young American soldiers, 10,000 miles away from home, fighting on my behalf.

Thirty-five years ago, I left south Vietnam for political asylum. The war had ended. At the age of 13, I left with the understanding that I may or may not ever get to see my siblings or parents again. I was one of the first lucky 100,000 Vietnamese allowed to come to the US. Somehow, my family and I were reunited 5 months later, amazingly, in California. It was a miracle from God. If you haven't heard lately that this is the greatest country on earth, I am telling you that right now. It is the freedom and the opportunities presented it to me that put me here with all of you tonight. I also remember the barriers that I had to overcome every step of the way. My high school counselor told me that I cannot make it to college due to my poor communication skills. I proved him wrong. I finished college. You see. All you have to do is to give this little boy an opportunity and encourage him to take and run with it. Well, I took the opportunity and here I am. This person standing tonight in front of you could not exist under a socialist/communist environment. By the way, if you think socialism is the way to go, I am sure many people here will chip in to get you a one way ticket out of here. And if you didn't know, the only difference between socialism and communism is an AK-47 aiming at your head. That was my experience.

In 1982, I stood with a thousand new immigrants, reciting the pledge of allegiance and listening to the National Anthem for the first time as an American. To this day, I can't remember anything sweeter and more patriotic than that moment in my life.Fast forwarding, somehow I finished high school, finished college, and like any other goofball 21 year old kid, I was having a great time with my life, I had a nice job and a nice apartment in Southern California. In someway and somehow, I had forgotten how I got here and why I am here. One day I was at a gas station, I saw a veteran pumping gas on the other side of the island. I don't know what made me do it, but I walked over and asked if he had served in Vietnam. He smiled and said, "Yes". I shook and held his hand. The grown man began to well up. I walked away as fast as I could and at that very moment, I was emotionally rocked. This was a profound moment in life. I knew something had to change in my life. It was time for me to learn how to be a good citizen. It was time for me to give back..

You see. America is not place on the map, it isn't a physical location. It is an ideal, a concept. And if you are an American, you must understand the concept, you must buy into this concept and most importantly, you have to fight and defend this concept. This is about Freedom. and not free stuff. And that is why I am standing up here. Brothers and sisters, to be a real American, the very least you must do is to learn English and understand it well. In my humble opinion, you cannot be a faithful patriotic citizen if you can't speak the language of the country you live in. Take this document of 46 pages. Last I looked on the internet, there wasn't a Vietnamese translation of the US constitution. It took me a long time to get to the point of being able to converse and until this day, I still struggle to come up with the right words. It's not easy, but if it's too easy, it's not worth doing. Before I know this 46-page document, I learned of the 500,000 Americans who fought for this little boy. I learned of the 58,000 names scribed on the black wall at the Vietnam memorial. You are my heroes. You are my founders. At this time, I would like to ask all the Vietnam veterans to please stand....I thank you for my life. I thank you for your sacrifices, and I thank you for giving me the freedom and liberty I have today. I now ask all veterans, firefighters, and police officers, to please stand....On behalf of all first generation immigrants, I thank you for your services and may God bless you all."

barit,

I'm old enough to remember going the Hollywood Palladium to see Lawrence Welk and his Orchestra. I grew up on it actually. His grandson Larry Welk is a chopper pilot. He was doing local traffic here in LA till the budget goons at KCAL/KCBS handed him his hat.

Anyway, one of my fond childhood memories.

You're very welcome. In a previous age I was a frequent visitor to southern Georgia, some expresssions occasionally pop up.

Lyman I wonder what Rosanne's daddy would have done with that song. I'll bet it would have been wonderful.

Sultan,

Regarding your comments
...now attacks the Dem Col. Duckworth running against him for only loosing two legs and damage to an arm in a UH-60 crash in the battle zone. His attack is true heros do not mention their wounds. Two missing legs are kind of hard to miss.
Bullshit. I actually did some research instead of listening to MSNBC. She may be a Disabled Vet but she's also a puppet of the Obama Camp. She is offering no solutions to the issues in Illinois and her whole campaign is based on filming Joe Walsh at Town Hall meetings, picking out snippets and then repeating them out of context.

Also, her campaign is being run by Rahm Emanuel and David Axlerod. The strategy is right out of the Piven and Cloward handbook. She won't debate Joe Walsh, even though every time he mentions her name in a Town Hall meeting, he calls her a Hero.

What else do you got?

What I find interesting about her is she is still in the National Guard despite the injuries she received.

I will be the first to state I admire her for her accomplishments and how well she adapted to life after being so grievously wounded. When her story first came out showing her progress through rehabilitation and how wonderfully her Husband supported her....one rightfully should admire her.

Now as to her rapid rise in the Illinois Democratic Party.....one must admit she is the Darling of the Party that has promoted her ascension. She is a very capable Woman with a good education and drive.

But now that she is in the political arena....her campaign and positions are subject to debate and criticism.

If anything....Duckworth might be guilty of something John Kerry did to some extent....except this Lady absolutely earned the right to wear the Purple Heart....and surely earned our respect and admiration.

That being said....I do not like John McCain for his politics but at the same time think very highly of him for his service in Vietnam.....especially for those very long years as a POW.

I have watched the video's of Walsh talking about Duckworth....and he makes a point of showing respect for her service.....but does criticize her for making it a cornerstone of her campaign. He could have said it differently and it would not have come across as it did to those who don't listen to everything that was said.

I would have stated how much I respect her for serving....and how much I admire her for overcoming her wounds....but would then say the election is not about that....it is about her position on issues that is to be voted for or against.

SAS, the video I saw of Walsh, he did precisely that.

Anyway, I was going after the Troll, not the Candidate.

Cheers,

She's a tool, 11Fan. Nothing but a tool for the Dems to trot out onto stage and, with purple heart in hand, say "Look at this. A true Democratic war hero." Despicable, loathsome and really shows what the party I used to support has stooped down to.

There is a concentration camp in Germany, Dachau I believe, where one of the signs hanging over the entrance reads "Never again." (Nie wieder in German.) I've been thinking of hanging something similar over my front door. With the words "Democratic Party" next to them.

Anyone here see how loathesome and cheap the Dems are?

Wellstone funeral, anyone? "hey, he croaked, let's sell T-Shirts"....A rally, then...

The Dems would sell children into slavery if they could win an election with it. Wait, they already do. It's called Public 'Education'...

James Earl Jones.
Wasn't he the author of that book called Roots they made the movie of.
If I remember correctly he said this was about his life then later admitted that he was not Kuta Kin Tay or had anything to do with his roots.
lied to all to sell his book and movie, kind of like Obama, maybe they are related.
Now he is blaming another part of life on the tea party.
So which root is it, the American Indian part or the black part.
Thought we had that color issue behind us all now yet he has to blame someone for this problem.
I am white and have some American Indian blood in me, Still I don't trust Obama , who can I blame this on?
Maybe I can get some help and welfare money for this.
Where can I apply.

Winning The Future

Hmm, what's wrong with this picture?

Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday he opposes a new photo ID requirement in Texas elections because it would be harmful to minority voters and told the NAACP in Houston that he will do everything he can to make sure the law doesn’t stand.
Attorney General Eric Holder Tells NAACP in Houston He Will Not Allow Texas Voter ID Law to Happen | TheBlaze.com

But in order to go to the speech.......

Earlier today, Attorney General Eric Holder addressed the NAACP Nation Convention at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. What did media need in order to attend? That's right, government issued photo identification (and a second form of identification too!), something both Holder and the NAACP stand firmly against when it comes to voting. Holder's DOJ is currently suing Texas for "discriminatory" voter ID laws.

Man, I'll be glad to get rid of this group of dickwads.

No. That was an author named Alex Haley who has been dead & buried the last 20 years, which sort of makes the rest of your post pointless. Jones is an actor. He did portray Haley in a miniseries.

Until this flap about presenting an ID to vote, it never occurred to me not to. When I go to vote, I give them my driver's license and they check that "i'm me" against the voter rolls.

Anybody who thinks this is not a good idea to keep elections honest never lived in a place where dead people in cemeteries regularly voted.

Also, it's happening now. A friend who lives in South Carolina where this ID issue is raging before the November election, went to vote in the afternoon after work in the recent primary and she was informed she had already voted. She was angry to say the least.

And they would not allow her to vote, because it could not be sorted out before the polls closed. So from now on she's going to have to vote with an absentee ballot in advance.

The electoral worker told my friend that at least 25 or so people showed up to vote in the afternoon who "had already voted."

The folks who are fighting this showing of an ID to vote do not appear to be doing so on some principle. They are exploiting the loophole for sure.

My friend said, sure, if there are 95 year old voters in her state who due to their race or age have trouble getting documents to show who they are to get state issued IDs, then deal with each of those cases individually and help them get their ID.

But instead "certain" politicos are exploiting the existence of a handful of these folks, often minorities, as a discrimination issue to rig votes by keeping the ID issue one of racial and age discrimination rather than a practical one of being sure folks are allowed to vote by not having bogus voters vote in their place.

There was a rumor in her town when the press looked into it that the same people were going from precinct to precinct voting under others' names. CCTV cameras showed it them entering many different polling places.

Rice, and Romney, the San Francisco Treat.

ROMNEY NARROWS VP CHOICES; CONDI EMERGES AS FRONTRUNNER
Thu Jul 12 2012 19:30:01 ET

**Exclusive**

Late Thursday evening, Mitt Romney's presidential campaign launched a new fundraising drive, 'Meet The VP' -- just as Romney himself has narrowed the field of candidates to a handful, sources reveal.

And a surprise name is now near the top of the list: Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice!

The timing of the announcement is now set for 'coming weeks'.

Hello my fellow ring wings....

Condy would not be a good choice. She is too smart, and too much of a success to connect with black voters. The actives in the black caucus resent sisters especially who do well, and make them look inferior. It would be field day for all the usual black mouth breathers to savage her in a willing Press. It would be exactly what the egg sucking Press wants...some issue to distract from Mitt and his message. He would get buried under false issue after false issue.

If you think Thomas and Cain were given a hard time by the bastards in the media, well, Condy is just wrong.

The opportunity awaits to choose some achiever, a woman, who is the opposite of the moron behind Obama.... Vice Pres debates would be killer.

Whoever he chooses, the Press will despise, and attempt to destroy..
