Jesus, we have had 30 years of US companies buying up
iconic companies in Aus !
About the same here, but it was the Dutch buying up US iconic companies.

That was my first reaction also. In Canada something like 8 out of 10 cups of 'takeout' coffee comes from Tim's so there's this huge customer base. I don't know how that will translate to sales for Burger King.

Think, if they only sold cakes to 4 out of 8 of those customers, the sales and profit would be huge.

Getting people in the door is one important part, then trying to get as much $ as possible from them so add on sales of all that BK makes is important.

500 the Tim's base is roughly one store per 10,000 people, in Canada. Where I live that ratio is one store per 6,000 - 25,000 population, four stores all owned by the same lady - and they all make money. We do not have a BK, but there are two McDo's - one in Wal Mart, thus limited hours - so we may be in for a BK franchise if the deal goes through. I don't know what their business figures are since apart from a rare order of French fries I never eat the stuff. Interestingly enough, there used to be a Dunkin Donuts, whose coffee I preferred, but they went out of business.

Speaking of Dunkin Donuts, I think they opened a couple of stores in London a few years ago to test the market. Personally I didn't think it would work in England.

I've always wondered if they are still there, or if the test results made them rethink the idea of having Dunkin Donuts in London or the UK in general.

Seems to me the strategy of Burger King is solely to latch on to Tim Horton's status as a Canadian corporation so as to take advantage of Canada's much lower corporate tax rate.

I haven't seen anything to suggest any change in operations of the two enterprises.

BK & TH

...to take advantage of Canada's much lower corporate tax rate.
It's called "crony capitalism" and "moral hazard".

The US could take hardnosed steps to keep BK tax revenue captured. The USSR did that - until they imploded, that is.

US companies are already in the firing line over shifting costs and profits.

Why worry about BK, start with those that have been doing it for donkeys years, Microsoft, Google, Apple, Amazon and a host of other high tech companies.

Shifting sands.

The law permits it

The shareholders approve it

and money flows and pricing clearly indicate what is right.

If the govt thinks it wrong, then either change the laws or use a bigger carrot to lure big business.

Amen, can't fault management for doing what is best for the shareholders and the company as a whole.

And the left and media (mostly the same thing) yawn:

Lois Lernerís Blackberry was intentionally destroyed after Congress had begun its probe into IRS targeting of conservative groups, a senior IRS lawyer acknowledged in a sworn declaration.

Thomas Kane, Deputy Assistant Chief Counsel for the IRS, wrote in the
declaration, part of a lawsuit filed by Judicial Watch against the IRS, that the Blackberry was "removed or wiped clean of any sensitive or proprietary information and removed as scrap for disposal in June 2012."
IRS lawyer: Lois Lerner's Blackberry deliberately destroyed after start of congressional probe | Fox News

For those that are allergic to Fox News, try to read the facts quoted from a sworn, legally-binding deposition, not fixating on the source of those facts.

Imagine if this was Dubya's administration or a Romney one. Think it wouldn't be front page/lead story of every national and international outlet every day?

Interesting on several levels:

President Barack Obama is slated to attend the wedding of his personal chef Sam Kass and MSNBC host Alex Wagner on Saturday.

Kass and Wagner, dubbed by Vogue the political "'It-couple' of the year," are getting married at Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills, N.Y. Kass is the Obama family's personal chef and the president's senior policy adviser for nutrition policy. He is also the executive director of "Let's Move."
Obama to attend Kass, Wagner wedding - POLITICO.com

1) Yet another example of the in-breeding between the, mostly, liberal media and this Administration and

2) funny how no mention of this, personal chef, was made during all the infamous "1%" and "silver spoon" claims for Romney during the 2012 election cycle.

Why oh why does Obama do this and make him and the US look weak ?

"It was a media conference in which US President admitted he had no strategy for fighting terrorists".

And then he says "he has directed the Joint Chiefs and others (can't remember who he said) to come up with plans and options in regards to military action".

Like, he is trying to sound so statesmanlike but surely most people know the mil is way way ahead of him in terms of planning these things and they don't wait until something kicks off to have contingency plans in place !!!

I was hoping no one had seen that disaster of a press conference. The French PM and cabinet in late May, 1940 showed more aggresiveness and competence than this Harvard educated 'cool' community organizer.

Barry is in over his head and doesn't really care.

Some sad, sad Germans out there...

The US in in serious trouble when he wears a baggy, light tan suit
that sends Twitter into the stratosphere !

Some of the spoofs are brilliant - used car salesman !!!

'Yes we tan': Barack Obama's suit FAIL"

Check out the photos, some are very funny.

Re "Barry is in over his head and doesn't really care."

Well, he shouldn't be, he has some of the best military minds in the world working for him.

That is if he hasn't pissed them off so much that they have given up and are biding time.

Most of those 'minds,' have been forced out and most of his current crop of senior leaders toe the line. As they should unless they resign.

As they aren't, then they are complicit.

The troops and the lower ranks up to about the 1 star or so level are indeed 'slow rolling' until 2016.

Too bad the world isn't operating on that same time schedule.
