Urban Search and Rescue personnel were deployed as soon as they were available. Local teams from Christchurch were entering buildings less than an hour after the quake occurred. Auckland and Palmerston North teams arrived in the city within hours. International teams were on the ground in the first few days.

The Christchurch 2011 earthquake response involved teams from New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, UK and USA.

Guess you were isolated from all of this in the good old days, perhaps too young to comprehend.

Was nice the wall came down, I was there a week before it did, where was you?

I may be younger than you, but I am no spring chicken. I had one of those 16% mortgages and I remember well when the wall came down. I grew up on the other side of it, so don't, for a minute, tell me what was good and what was bad.

What Reagan and Thatcher did for the free world will never be repeated in our lifetime.

I'm a past member of the San Diego Sherrif volunteer search and rescue team.
Good onya, WC!

I found myself in a very nice bar on the Quay in old Marseille in late spring, 2003, sitting with my Democrat friend, soaking in the sunshine after taking a Bouillabaisse dinner at the source.

We were in France as the only USAF operation in the country, operationally enforcing the post-Kosovo no fly zone and standing by for any hostile eruption. But at that point in time it was really a Provence vacation. I was pro-Iraq invasion, which was in-process, and my friend was anti.

Our bar tender was a stunningly beautiful, young Latvian female, in her early 20's, working in Marseille. This was at the height of anti-American protests in Paris and London, ("not in our name") and friction between France and the US, Bush and Chirac, over the invasion.

My friend brought up the topic with our bar tender, anticipating a typical European response - America is bad, a bully. "What do you think about the US invasion?", he said.

To my surprise, and great satisfaction, she responded, in English, that the US gave her Freedom and opportunity she never thought possible, that she loved the US and wouldn't think of not standing up for it, as the US stood up for Latvia. "The US is the only hope for the world."

My friend squirmed a bit at that response, while I could only wink, nod approval, smile, and leave a nice tip.

As Paul Newman once said, "Why would I go out for a cheeseburger when I've got steak at home?"

As has been noted, those who have lived under the oppression of their own government in Eastern Europe bring a fresh perspective few in the west can understand.

Yup, sure do, back when Jimmy Carter was President.

When Carter left office the inflation rate was 13.5%

When Reagan left office the inflation rate was 4.8%

Mortgage rates when Carter left office, 18.45

Mortgage rates when Reagan left office, 6.74

And Reagan broke the back of the Soviet Union at the same time with the help of Thatcher.

Reagan oversaw a tremendous recovery, short in length with a very healthy rate of growth in the economy, without adding Tens of Millions to Food Stamp Roles, without seeing record numbers of folks dropping out of the Labor Market, and without such a horrible increase in both Deficit Spending and the National Debt.

Reagan did what he said he would do and that was attend to the Economy.

Welfare Man has not.

True, but it is the one we worry about the most.

True and True.

The intent of my comment was to imply that the anointed one was helping the economy, most likely not yours though.

Has anyone taken note of what happened this past weekend on our southern border between New Mexico and Mexico? Seems some Mexican cartels unleashed .50 cal fire on a couple of our Border Patrols who had to take cover afterwards. For obvious reasons. I saw an interview with one of the Border Patrol officers who was part of the team under fire and he said as the .50 cal fire was coming across a group of about 150 "illegals" came scampering across the border. He said that the .50 cal fire seemed almost like "covering fire."

WTF is going on here? And, most importantly, why are the National Guards of all the effected States not being deployed? This cannot stand.

I Believe the Governor of Texas is about to deploy 1,000 national guardsmen to the border.

Cartels suspected as high-caliber gunfire sends Border Patrol scrambling on Rio Grande | Fox News

U.S. Border Patrol agents on the American side of the Rio Grande were forced to take cover Friday night when high-caliber weaponry was fired at them from the Mexican side of the river
Not to mention the Mexican Army helicopter gun ship that fired on a Border Patrol vehicle a couple of weeks ago.

And Obama keeps going to fund raisers.

Con:

this is all despicable. Firing on Border Patrol officers? By cartel members with .50 cal weapons?

Me thinks Gov. Rick Perry has the proper solution: deployed thousands of National Guard to the border areas, armed to the teeth.

This cannot stand.

I reckon a few platoon of Sustained fire MG's (the one's on the tripod) and banks of trip detonated Claymores
would stop more than a few from trying to cross.

You have got one of the biggest Armies in the world, currently working out how to employ people
after 10 years of war and the US let's Cartels fire 50 cal MG's over the border.

I don't think I have ever seen a US so feeble.

I hope the ROE states, "If fired on, fire back. If it looks like you are going to receive incoming fire, fire first."

We're becoming feeble for one reason and one reason only: O'Bummer.

But, then again, the Governors of the individual states on the borders with Mexico are free to deploy their troops as they deem necessary. Gov. Rick Perry just did that.

Wanna fire .50 cal rounds across the border Senor Juarez? See what comes back at ya.

con's ROE: Roger that, con.
