Um...: Never had the pleasure of meeting Keola, but I do have permission from MrsP to engage Stephen Grimes to build me a guitar for slack-key. All I have to do is get my sorry saggy (but spam-free) @ss back to the Big Island.

Haiku time:

Old man seeks doctor
"I eat Spam daily", he says.

Spam is actually made from pigs???

Thought it was road kill mashed up with re-cycled polystyrene cups.

I still remember, fondly, the Spam fritters in the RAF.
They were really tasty, and you could use them as
brake pads on your car.

Far more, I expect, than you would ever want to know. Stumbled upon the place off I-90 in Austin, Minnesota.

My Mum always kept a tin of Spam in the house to feed to the old man when he pissed her off.

I believe the Yanks used the stuff to fill in any holes
in the road caused by those naughty Germans as they
wandered back home.
Probably THOUSANDS of cans still buried in Europe.

A FEAST FROM THE CAN: HONORS FOR SPAM AT 50 - The New York Times

''I ate my share of Spam along with millions of other soldiers,'' Dwight D. Eisenhower wrote to Hormel in 1966. ''I'll even confess to a few unkind remarks about it - uttered during the strain of battle, you understand. But as former Commander in Chief, I believe I can still forgive you your only sin: sending us so much of it.''

The Canadians get my respect for building this:

Complete with a glass floor, so you can stand on it and look down at 1,000 feet of nothing under your feet:

Any questions?

There are stairs - for emergencies and lunatics only - but what you're seeing there is the framework of the elevator. Such is the scale of the beast.

I hope there are no Koreans reading all the disparaging comments about Spam. It's revered in that country. A friend received a case as a gift on a national holiday.

I have always disliked Spam - both food and computer versions. Spam appeared on the table during USA WW2 meat rationing. I didn't like it then or now.

Agreed, I was there when for a few days when it was being built. A colleague was a civil engineer and he explained that it was all done in one continuous concrete pour. A few years later I had the chance to stand on the glass floor, it really is an experience.

Hmmm pork, just recently been banned for me.
So that's why you've been giving away those bacon butties on another thread.

It's true. The Hawaiian affinity for Spam is unfathomable, but there it is. They love it.

Never mind the availability of incredibly diverse seafood. Forget the exquisite local beef from the big island (Kale Ewa Joe's Kaneohe for Prime Prime Rib). They want Spam.

Ah yes the Tower...

Been at the top with my head sticking out. Walked around on the roof of the restaurant and did many other interesting things.

After an excellent landing you can use the airplane again!

Just the other day it occurred to me that there are no threads being rude about Canadians, and this worried me a little, as it seems a bit unfair.

One can imagine a group of Canadians sitting quietly waiting to be asked to join the “we all hate you” club, but being totally ignored.

No-one suggesting that Canadians are overly fond of their livestock.
No-one suggesting that Canadian armoured vehicles have 4 reverse gears & 1 forward gear.
No-one suggesting that Canadian sheep are unattractive.
No-one suggesting that Canadians go “parrot-shooting”
Etc. etc.

And yet, suddenly here’s a thread which seems to have sprung out of nowhere and already at eight pages length!

The only thing is - take out the posts about poutine & spam and not a lot remains.....

Surely we can do better than this ?

Unfortunately, the only derogatory story about Canadians I know was related by an old friend (Naval type with lots & lots of gold braid) of me dad’s :

“Dratted Canadians, caused no end of bother in the weeks up to Munich; there were a bunch of them trying to enlist to ‘fight the Germans’. Kept telling them we weren’t at war with anyone; one of them was a smart-alec who said he wanted to enlist ‘in order to beat the rush later’”
