Breathes there the man, with soul so dead,
Who never to himself hath said,
This is my own, my native land!
Whose heart hath ne'er within him burn'd,
As home his footsteps he hath turn'd,
From wandering on a foreign strand!

Re: What It Means To Be British?

Without repeating too much from another thread.
Watching on the BBC tonight with a lot of pride the rescue of a Russian submersible.Hats off to the RAF who made it possible for the rescue team to be asembled and get out there quicker than anyone else.Pride in the Royal Navy underwater rescue team who got there under difficult circumstances and got all seven submariners back to the surface alive.
That's what it means to be British..the best professional services in the world with an ever shrinking budget.

Re: What It Means To Be British?

Surveys like these are a complete load of crap. Every now and then a news paper or ITV or some other rag-esque branch of the media does this in an effort to

a) Display how multi-cultural Britain is
b) Revive the national pride thing (St Georges Cross etc for England)
c) To support the football teams

Its cringe worthy. It means nothing to be British, unless you feel the need to super-impose meaningless attributes onto the group of people you inhabit a space with. Its a pretty stupid question which provokes only out pourings of centimental twaddle.

Harsh but I'm being honest.

Re: What It Means To Be British?

Before I emigrate to NZ could somebody tell me if it still shuts at a weekend and do people still drive Mk.II Ford Cortinas?

Australia is out because I couldn't cope with the lack of proper beer.

Switzerland, lovely country but they can't make up their mind what language they want to speak, very confusing.

But to be serious what I feel so desparately sad about is that the Britain, or to be more precise England, is losing its identity in the sacred name of 'multi-culturalism' and political correctness.

I have absolutely no problem with people from other cultures coming to the UK to find work and improve their standard of living for themselves and their families but I do have a problem with them changing the face of MY country by importing their beliefs, customs and values to a point where, for example a town's entire identity changes e.g. Bradford.

From Tony Draper:
Breathes there the man, with soul so dead,
Who never to himself hath said,
This is my own, my native land!
Whose heart hath ne'er within him burn'd,
As home his footsteps he hath turn'd,
From wandering on a foreign strand!
O Caledonia! stern and, wild,
Meet nurse for a poetic child!
Land of brown heath and shaggy wood
Land of the mountain and the flood,
Land of my sires! what mortal hand
Can e'er untie the filial band

Re: What It Means To Be British?

We're open all hours nowadays Mouse, but expect to pay a premium on public holidays.

There are no Cortinas left on our roads. These days everyone drives used Japanese imports. They're cheap, reliable, fuel efficient, and they have air-conditioning ...everything the Cortina wasn't, in fact. I did love my Cortina. It was the duck's nuts. It went like a shower of fast stuff. But I owned it in Pomgolia, so that's all in the past.....

If you're after proper beer, avoid the North Island. The Real New Zealand is located south of Cook Strait. Set your compass due south, your social barometer to 1970, your technology finder to 2050, your watch to knockoff time + 10mins, and you'll find us in the public bar. We'll have a cold one waiting for you.

The last bastion isn't a myth. It's alive and well and living right here

Re: What It Means To Be British?

As an Australian who's lived and worked in Britain, my opinion is that, whatever it once meant, and whatever sentimentalists and readers of the Daily Telegraph think it means, it means less and less to be British. Look at Arsenal.

In that, Britain is sadly no orphan. The world seems slowly to be becoming the same place.

I think the Swiss prefer agreeable and civil British over the v&o kind. Even so, the CH'ers could and would have held out a long while agin the Jerries, thanks to a lot of very defensible terrain and a really bad attitude in regard to invaders.
Sans Brits the Swiss might still be walking down their hills in winter, tho.

Re: What It Means To Be British?

Being British means being able to laugh at myself and my culture. It means loving my country deeply without feeling the need for lots of patriotic displays. It means sitting in a pub in the New Forest on my first trip home in four years and finding myself silently weeping over the simple pleasure of a cheese and pickle ploughmans and a pint of real ale.

I don't think this country is perfect and there are probably better places to live, but I've spent enough of my life in other parts of the world to know that this is my home.

Gouabafla,

Definitely. Couldn't have put it better. The one thing I miss when I'm overseas is our unique sense of humour. It separates us from all other cultures and I love it.
