Blocking out titles

What is the reason for an airline blocking out the titles on a damaged aircraft?

I assume that it is a pax psychology thing where you don't want them freaking out as they taxy by and see the same make and model looking like it's been through a giant meat grinder.

But then if this is the case.....why do the majority of the airlines that do this not cover up the tail section? i saw an air france photo recently where they had covered over the titles but not the all too familiar, even to the densest of pax, tailfin!

Or is there another reason for it?

It's pretty much to hide the airline identity. Maybe the photo you saw was taken before the paint team got to the wreck!

Stops the press publishing photos of the aircraft in a distressed state too......we scrapped a 727 a while ago and someone was supposed to make sure that the company logo was painted out, but it never happened......some time later a picture of the aircraft's tail section laying on the ground, complete with our titles still on it, was posted on the net under 'Aircraft crashes'

Not good for the image, and said individual does not work for us anymore.
