Unhappy Quick Remedies for a Cold?

I'm flying out on Thursday to Italy to a lovely hotel on the shores of the Italian lakes with two unbelievable swimming pools, the outdoor one being surrounded by Romanesque statues. All fine & dandy you might think but it's not. I've been visualising myself for the last month taking a few dips a day in a wonderful setting & what do I catch courtesy of my boss but catch a friggin cold. Lousy timing I know.

Infact I'm smothering & dying with it (well not literally but you know what I mean). Now I fear the only dip I'm going to be taking for the first half of my holiday is in a friggin bath.

Now why this always happens when I'm flying off somewhere I don't know. The same happened in January when I had to fly to London on a business trip. I was so miserable at the airport I promptly announced to airport security that I didn't want to travel at all. Only for my pathetic demeanour they might have thought I was up to something underhanded but he just nodded sympathetically.

I cough, spluttered & splattered through a beautiful meal in a wonderful setting while some poor PPRuNer I had arranged to meet sat there quietly & sympathetically. I really have to thank him for being so gracious about it.

Infact this has been my third cold this year, must be something of a record for me!

So what I was wondering does anyone have any homegrown, household cures they might like to share with me, no arsenic or strychnine in the ingredients please.

Please help me, I'm desperate!

hot toddies are good.

But I swear by homeopathic remedies, results are almost over night with no side effects.

Hopefully that helps and drink pleanty of fluids better to be non alcoholic

Vitamin C and Echinacaea. They will boost the immune system to help fight it.

If you have a sore throat, I can recommend and honey and/or ice cream. A hot toddy might help you sleep and either Karvol or Olbas Oil to relieve a stuffy noise.

I daren't give any other advice as I as sure somebody will point out to me that, not being a qualified physician or pharmacist, I should not recommend medications.

Cheers

You're not in cohoots with him, are you?

No, this time I don\'t have a sore throat. BTW I\'M NOT going on another course of friggin antibiotics. I had to be put on them for London just so I could function & my body has had enough of the stuff being shoved into it for another decade I hope.

What homeopathic remedies Tall & Tasty?

Like Whirls says, vitamin C. It's just about the only thing that actually has any effect on the body's ability to fight the cold itself and doesn't simply relieve the symptoms.

To back up the dram of whiskey/hot toddy advice, I can confidently state that nothing masks the effects of a cold quite as well as a severe hangover. It also gives you something worthwhile to blame feeling a bit ropey on.

So numerous glasses of orange juice mixed with the spirit of your choice followed by a hot toddy or four would seem to me to be the best bet.

Hey, who even needs a cold? It sounds like a good enough idea anyway!

Buchu brandy, port, honey, lemon juice and four aspirin in a large mug. Top up with boiling water and drink as hot as possible. Go to bed and sleep for ten hours.

Go to your local health food store (if you have one) and get echinaforce. Its a plant extract, it tastes like crap but its is without a doubt the best thing to get rid of a cold quickly. Also take as much vitimin C as you can and drink loads of water.

You could try the 9 mil pill to get a bit more airflow through your head. Browning does a particularly effective version and it's available over the counter if you know where to go.

Well if it's really a cold and not the flu, may I suggest you cover up more often? Instead of wearing those skimpy outfits at the wrong time of year?

PS. It's no wonder that the Romanesque statues around the outdoor pool are so modest. So early in the spring, to put it in your own words, it can still be friggin cold outdoors. So stay in, there's a good girl!

It was actually my boss who stripped off to early.

He came into the office last Friday smothered & has got a grilling from me re did he start wearing light clothes too early in the season.

I started quoting the old house wifes adage

Never cast a cloth till May is out
Learnt it through bitter experience myself.

The good news is while I was getting progressively worse yesterday I've cleared over greatly over night, this strain is far less virulent than the other two I caught which took weeks to shake. I'll keep taking the Beechams Hot Lemon, bought Robinsons Barley Water yesterday & a lemon on the way home from work. I'll see how I'm feeling later today & do I need anything else.

I'll avoid the hot tody thanks, doesn't agree with my teeetotaler taste buds

Thanks for all your advice.

If viral......

To clear the gunk from your tubes, place yourself in a small room with a kettle and keep it boiling for 20 minutes - no less - while you inhale the vapours (from afar). Preferably in a room where you want to change the wallpaper so you can get your decorating in early.

Paracetamol for pain and discomfort. Drink plenty of water. All the rest is nonsense. When it's over you can have a wee dram to celebrate.

If bacterial, zap the buggers with the strongest antibiotic you can get your hands on
