What a rip off

Just got back from taking the OPSmobile for a quote on removing some rust from its boot lid.

They said that it would cost 25 + VAT for the quote, and this wasn't refundable in the event that I gave them the job.

I think this is outrageous, but before I call them thieving b*ggers out to fleece every last penny off the customer.... Are they justified in this? I realise there are timewasters out there, but to not even refund the fee!!

One day, the bricks n' mortar shops will ask you to pay before coming in to look at the latest plasma TV and answer questions about whether it's really a HD set, what you'll need to connect it to your present setup etc. too...

No Sir, these days, if one is looking for a quote, one should take out a 1/4 page advert in the Economist or Times and put out a tender! That way, you can charge them for the necessary documents on which to base their quotes. Might one suggest the title "Offer for tender: Major automobile works". Hell, you might even get some EU regional aid...

Isn't that what the government does to us through the tax system?

Reminds me of a slogan I saw once:

"Do not steal. The government doesn't like competition."

The trick with tyres is:
1. Phone a tyre shop. Get a price.
2. Knock a percentage off. Phone another tyre shop. Say "I've been quoted (your own figure- if it is only slightly less than your original quote it is more immediately believable, but frankly almost any figure you care to invent will work). What is your price?"
3. Take the second shop's price, phone another shop. Quote their price if you like, or you can deduct a little more if you like.
4. Repeat as often as you like. My personal best was getting two tyres for 100, when the first quote I had was 140 each.
