It depends of what and why you fly.
I in 2008 I was flying a corporate helicopter (R44) and I stopped in Roma Urbe. I would never go again.
- Park in front of AVGAS (and of course shut down) and wait 1/2 hour, cooked on a very black asphalt by the summer sun, (38°C)
- Start-up again, move to park, shut down.
- Report to ARO and fill up the form.
- Go the the police office
- Go back again to ARO
- Listen to all swearing of my boss.
Depending what you fly, on what purpose and where you come/go, check
Capitalia Heliport (in 2008 fuel not available, call them)

PM me if you need a cell phone of (english speaking) the owner (if still there, the son is airline pilot)
or Sabaudia airfield

If you fly a private light aircraft, check this for you trips in Italy (you have to register)

I drive an Aerostar so LIRA is a little short, however to avoid hazzle you seem to get at LIRU I could always squeeze in.
What do you mean by "Remember you must fill up and submit a flight plan to enter Roma Area."

VFR flight plan - Rome Area
I don't have access to a botlang in this moment. All info are here
AIP (more tricky than a botlang and you have to register)
VFR is allowed, but don't just pop-up at the gates without an open flight plan sticking to published VFR routes and altitudes.
I gave ARO FCO a call (+39 06 65953218), they confirmed what I remember I used to do 2 years ago.

I might just have lost the AIP passage you folks are mentioning, but as long as you carry an ELT, VFR in Italy is allowed nationwide without flight plan.
In LIRU a reduced flight plan is compulsory for local flights only.
Time permitting i'll go deeper in it.

Roma Urbe LIRU is VFR only and has a 1000m runway. If you're coming in on an IFR FPL you can route as if you're landing in Ciampino LIRA and cancel IFR approaching URB NDB, URB being the FAF for the instrument procedures in LIRA.
Ciampino LIRA has a 3300m runway, if I recall, so it should be enough for your Aerostar... maybe you meant LIRU when you said "LIRA is a little short"... But really, how much runway do you need for your Aerostar??

If you're looking for a quick fuel stop without any ATC or landing fees hassle, then you should consider Terni, a nice airstrip with a 1000m hard runway just northeast of the Rome area; it has a self-service gas pump with both 100LL and Jet A1, and also MoGas for the smaller Rotax-powered planes. They also accept credit cards.

Only "need" 3000ft (900m), to avoid having to do the maths. Doing the maths I could probably get out of 2500ft depending on conditions.
Any further observations on LIRA?
Can't find the Terni one? Identifier?
I see there is another one not mentioned LIRG, that looks like a GA airport (on Google earth). Anyone been there?

I have found more information on Terni on the Aeroclub's website:
AEST, in Italy there are plenty of airfields which are not classified as "airports" and in most cases they do not have an ICAO indicator. Terni is one such airfield. In case you'd fly to such an airfield with a flight plan, you should use ZZZZ as destination and add the name of the destination in the notes section as DEST/AVIOSUPERFICIE TERNI so that ATC understands you're going there.

Just looked at LIRA. Seems like Luca pressed the 3 instead of the 2.
Seems like 2200m to me, still not a problem.
What are fees like there? Ground transportation?
Terni looks pretty good alternative too.

Ciampino is where Ryan flies to, so no problems with ground transportation. You can expect quite high fees for landing and handling though. Terni on the other hand has no fees whatsoever, but if you need to travel to downtown Rome, it is not too convenient.
I would not rule out Urbe, runway length should not be a problem, unless you're planning your trip for the hottest of months, that is.
