A320 lungo a Praia
An Airbus 320 owned by Spanish airline LTE and rented by TACV Cabo Verde Airlines failed to come to a halt before reaching the end of the runway at Praia International Airport upon landing yesterday, July 27, and finally managed to stop on the dirt beyond the limits of the runway. Fortunately, despite the obvious scare, no damage or injuries were registered, and the aircraft was scheduled to return to Portuguese capital Lisbon before the end of the day Sunday.
The incident took place at 3:53 pm. The aircraft, an Airbus 320 with 172 passengers on board, was arriving from Lisbon four hours late. Upon landing, the aircraft failed to stop before reaching the end of the runway, and ended up coming to a halt on the dirt beyond the asphalt. Passengers on the flight reported that dust and smoke filled the aircraft cabin after the landing, attesting to the anomaly of this TACV flight.
“Personally, I think the plane was coming in too fast when it landed, and what was great about all this is that at the end everyone applauded,” said a Portuguese passenger on the flight. A Cape Verdean passenger said she heard “a sort of explosion” as the aircrafts brakes were activated. “Objectively, what probably happened is that the pilot let too much of the runway go by before landing, and then didn’t have enough maneuvering space to conclude the operation,” said another source.
According to the director of Praia International Airport, Eurídice Mascarenhas, the incident is under investigation in order to determine its causes. Apart from this, she said, “all objective conditions are in place for the airport to safely resume activities.” According to Mascarenhas, none of the passengers “required any type of assistance.”
According to TACV Cabo Verde Airlines commercial director Georgina Melo, “fortunately, everything is under control,” with nothing particularly out of the ordinary having been reported. “There were even passengers who didn’t even notice that anything different from normal had occurred. Preliminary evidence indicates that there was a problem with the brakes, but only an inquiry will be able to determine what happened. The commander kept good control of his aircraft and quickly stabilized it immediately beyond the runway.”
The Airbus 320, which TACV is leasing from Spanish company LTE, had to be towed from the zone in which it came to a stop.
