Looking for indicators on the cost of rented furnished accommodation, availibility and area where not to stay 
Nothing lavished or grand I am just a poor Engineer

Depends what are you looking for.
You need about 350-400€ for an appartment, I guess you have a car, then I would suggest you Sesto Calende, a lot of the foreign pilots stay there (lived there for 2 years), its a very nice place at the lake, everything you need is around and its about 25min from MXP. With 500-600€ I am sure you get a nice house which you can share.
