Work Experience

Hi all fellow PPrunes,

I was wondering if you could tell me if there are any airlines that operate into Gatwick that offer work experience for what will be a fifteen year old. My ambition is to be a pilot and if i gained work experience in an airline i'm sure i would gain a lot and also learn a lot!

I am as its says in my profile a big aviation enthusiast and any replies would be hugely welcome.

Thankyou For Your Time,

Dave 14 (at da mo!)

Work Experience

Well then. Donkeys years ago I got in with Finnair at Heathrow for a few weeks. Had a lot of fun and learned somethings that are still useful.

Try opening the phonebook and look for companies that you'd like to work with. Give em a call , get the station manager on line, and ask him. They can only say NO. Or look for contact Email addresses on the web. Email and see what they say.

There are quite a few companies that do this sort of thing, ATC Lasham to name one.

Good luck.

Work Experience

Hiya,
I did work experience with a company at Liverpool Airport. The company had me doing check-in and boarding. They do everythin from the PSA's to Dispatch. The same company may do stuff down in London too.

Great Time, and they asked me to return so ended up doing about 3 weeks work experience!

If you want more info PM me

Hiya, im 16 now, but when I was 15 I did work experience at Bristol International Airport. Worked in the tower for a day, customer services and the fire crew.

Also got the chance to stay with Servisair for the afternoon, and the ADM (airport duty manager) gave me a tour of the airport, behind the scenes with the bags etc. Very interesting.

I also hope to become an airline pilot. I applied to a couple of airlines, but they were not taking work experience students at that time.

I learnt a great deal at the airport, and would suggest it if you cannot find a place with an airline.

Good luck :ok:

I was grateful, while I was in year 11, that I was given the opportunity to do work experience at Gloucestershire Airport. The title of my role was 'General Airport Administrator' which basically meant that I sampled all aspects of life at the airport, such as Air Traffic Control and the airport fire service.

It could be very worthwhile to enquire at the smaller airports as the chances of gaining a succesful placement are probably higher.

My experience at Gloucestershire Airport has made me commit myself to a career in avation - preferably as a pilot :) I will have to wait until I get my degree though and then, hopefully, I can train

I must say like, i found it impossible to find any airline willing to accept me for a work placement a few years ago. i ended up having to change my plans and go else where. I totally agree that you need ( or at least it helps ) to know someone on the inside.

I wrote to every airline at Newcastle inter'n and, although i did get a reply from them all, they all refused.

Good luck though.

Whispering Giant 16th November 2003 02:24

To all those asking about work experience - the airline that i work for does do work experiance placement's - but we are based down in Devon, the company though is very pro-active in promoting aviation and airline flying amonst people wishing to join the airline industry.
Most airport's since September 11th - now will not offer work experiance due to security reason's.
All i can suggest is you write to the airline directly (their head offices) rather than to the airport's.

Hope that this help's.

The security situation makes it very difficult these days.

When I was 16 (24 years ago) I did work-experience with Dan Air at Newcastle, and was issued an airside pass. Nowadays you have to have references and a Criminal Record Check to get one, which is a lot of trouble for a company to go through for very little benefit to them.

That said, at a bigger airport there is no reason why you couldn't gain valuable experience without having to go airside. Your school or college may be able to help when asking for work-experience attachments, or perhaps the local careers office.

Best of luck.

Gcse Work Experience

My daughter (15) is concluding her first GCSE year and will have to do a week of work experience in September. She currently attends ATC and has limited time in the Grob Tutor and motorized gliders.

She has currently been scheduled to do her work experience at a dentist, which is about as similar to her interests as the shuttle is to a bicycle.

I am looking for a company within reasonable travelling distance (for a 15 year old) from Bracknell Berks. where she would be exposed to the aviation industry.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

OBK! 22nd June 2004 00:39

I think the MetOffice is based somewhere in Bracknell, maybe you could try them? There website: www.metoffice.com

They issue huge amounts of weather data for pilots/airlines and I'm sure it would be better experience for your daugther than being in a dentist. Other than that I suggest looking on aviation job websites for positions in Bracknell. Your daugther obviously won't be able to apply for them but you'll be able to express interest in filling the position temporarily.

Good luck.

FlyUK 22nd June 2004 20:32

Well i live just down the road from you and was in that position a couple of years ago.(Now 18 and just finished A-levels) I did a lot of work into finding companies that would give me some work experience. A couple were helpful, although most just said they did not have any work experience available. Although i took up work experience with a computer company a friend of mine did some with honeywell in bracknell. He throughly enjoyed it and said he learned a lot! I'm affraid i can't give you any details as i don't have them to hand. But do definately get in contact with them, they may be able to help.

Expedite. :ok:

Pub User 22nd June 2004 23:27

Simon

How about the RAF at Odiham? When I was there (only a short while ago) we often had work-experience people there. One of my colleagues used to commute from Bracknell without difficulty; it may even be possible to arrange a lift with him.

Failing that, Farnborough is full of aviation-related companies. No idea about the transport situation though.

OBK

I think the Met Office is moving to Exeter soon isn't it?

work experience

Hi, its my first post so please dont fry me!!!:D

I'm in year 12 now and looking for a week of work experience and naturally want to do it with an airline or possibly an airport.

Does anyone know of any companies that run a work experience scheme? I've tried a few but none seem to do it these days:(

Thanks for your help!

Julian

Localiser Green 7th October 2004 17:38

I did mine at Manchester Airport, along with another guy, and I know of people who have done it at Britannia AW and Heathrow AP.

As with all these things though, it helps to know someone.

Work Experience.

Hello there pilots! , im quite young at the moment only at 13, but im wondering if there is any chance any pilots out there can get me some information on work experience on ANY airline in THE MIDLANDS only please , , thanks , speak to you soon

MMEMatty 12th October 2004 13:56

Dunno about airlines, but have you tried applying to East Midlands Airport, Brum Airport, etc? in my experience, airports are quite acocmodating and you can get some good trips out (a trip to Tees Tower and a blitz down the runway on an inspection were highlights of my WExp). At the very least you'll get a polite letter back saying "thanks, but no". Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Internships/work experience

Hi everyone!

I am a first year Electronic Engineering student in London and would like to apply for work experience/internship at any company/organisation within the aviation industry (e.g. airlines, manufacturers, ICAO, IATA, consulting companies, etc), preferably in management or flight operations (if possible).

I tried many companies but to no avail. Does anyone know of any internship or work experience for first year students?

Thanx:ok:

Work Experience

Hi, this is my first post so here goes!

I am in Year 11 and am thinking about work experince placements for next July (2006). I will be 16, and I am located within an hour from Heathrow and Gatwick.

What are the chances of being able to do work experience with an operator like BA or bmi?

I appreciate that I would have to apply for a 5 day visitor pass, but what are the chances of being in the operations side of things?

Would jumpseating be out of the question? I am prepared (and expecting) to write and phone around, and am interested in whether it was out of the question or not.

Finally, I was wondering whether or not people would be allowed into the simulators as an observer?

Thanks, Ben

shortcut_approved 29th November 2005 20:07

Hi Ben,

Sounds like me a few years ago! I also had work experience to find when I was in Year 10. I wrote a heart-felt letter to the work experience co-ordinator at BA about a year in advance, and was told they hadn't opened their diary yet, but would keep my letter until they did. Result was a week at Cranebank. Most of the time I was working on producing a presentation on the basic theory of flight for new entrant cabin-crew. However, the best times were in a 747-classic sim watching an Operator Proficiency Check! After the guys had finished, the training captain set up the sim for me to take-off and land at JFK, whilst in between, he demonstrated a little-trick they used to do, namely, flying between the towers of the WTC... Needless to say 9/11 was extra-chilling for me.... Also, on one of the days, I was allowed to follow and take part in a 747 Safety Equipment & Procedures Day. Extinguishing galley-fires, jumping down slides, and role-playing on-board emergencies...! Was all good.

In the Sixth Form, I managed to get a second place with them, using my contact from the first time - the Chief Longhaul Pilot. He managed to sort out two days of Management Shadowing, though there wasn't actually much of what the name suggested! I did however get a look inside Concorde at the hangar, and a jumpseat ride LHR-MAN-LHR on a shiny new A319; much more interesting!

Obviously a lot has changed since then, but I guess the moral of the story is "Ask and you MAY receive, knock and the door MIGHT be opened to you!"

Cheers,
Shortcut

PS Forgot to mention, it was on that jumpseat ride when I was being chaperoned by a long-term off-sick SFO that I was put onto good old PPruNe!

Aerospace101 29th November 2005 20:37

Sorry to tell you mate but the reply you will get from BA is;

"all work experience placements have been suspended"

The same is true of all other UK Airlines. It's a pity, I know and perhaps when recruitment picks up in a few years time they will change their minds.

Your best option however, would be to target Airport Operating authorities. Like write to BAA and try and some experience with them around Gatwick. Youd get to see the whole airport; runway inspections, control tower, oversee aircraft turnaround etc...

From the post above I know of friends in the past in 2000/2001 who got similar deals but 9/11 changed all that.

EGBKFLYER 30th November 2005 08:06

Might not be quite as exciting, but try your local flying school(s). I did my work experience at one and thoroughly enjoyed it. If you're near one of the big commercial schools (OAT/ Cabair etc) maybe you could try them too?

Best of luck

Squawk 2650 30th November 2005 08:22

Yeah I agree I used to work at Old Sarum and we used to get work experience guys in a lot. Probably best to wait until the summer for that … more flying!!!

I did my work experience in year 10 with the search and rescue helicopter at Lee On Solent absolutely awesome fun!! If you live near that way might be worth writing to them. It’s nice to see heli operations for a change and they are all a really top bunch of guys.

I applied for such a placement last year at blackpool airport, barton aerodrome and Manchester intl. Although was told because of the current security issues, that no airlines, nor companies within the airport would be able to offer any work exp.
(Baggage, ATC. etc.)

benwizz 30th November 2005 20:53

Oh right. Didn't somebody else post about visiting Gatwick tower a while ago? I seem to remember that the responses were generally positive.

Anyway thanks for all the advice :ok:

hingey 30th November 2005 21:05

I did my year 11 work experience in my local FTO down in Exeter, and my 6th form work experience at Air Southwest in Plymouth in July. Got to examine the a/c,(got a nice pic of me in the captains seat!), sit in on a flight to Jersey, and do a walk round with the FO. So the airlines haven't completely stopped work experience, but Plymouth is small compared to Gatwick or Heathrow, and Air Southwest is very small compared to BA! All I can suggest is you apply anyway, and as others have said, ask around your local schools. You never know what might turn up!

Best of luck

General Dread 7th December 2005 09:55

I tried getting that two years back. I tried all the airlines, with no luck at all.

Sorry its not a more helpful reply.

flyingmutant 7th December 2005 19:01

A few years ago I wrote to EVERY airlines address i could find operating out of heathrow and gatwick and got a abrupt NO or no response at all from all of them I'm afraid. Same answer from the ground handling companies too. Security is just way too tight at the bigger airports now.

However I did have a very enjoyable week with Flybe. in exeter in 2003. It seems to really depend on what staff are around but they'll have you spending time all over their base from operations to the matainence hangars. If you're real lucky, and a certian flybe guy pulls the right strings the airport operators may take you round their bits of the place for a day too (the tower etc..)

They take on one person a month but you'll have to write to them at least 6months ahead to get booked in, and hopefully have a old relative nearby to stay with...

Work Placement behind the scenes

This may seem a sort of moronic question, but I was wondering if any of you would be able to direst any advice in my direction as regards the possibility of a work placement at an airline. I am about to leave school and head to University but have recently thought about deferring my university offers in favour of taking a Gap year. I plan to read Law at Uni and hopefully go into the aviation law area upon completion of the degree.

Would it be in any way possible to persuade an airline to take me on for about 3 months (amount of time is flexible) so that I could get a look at the aviation industry from behind the scenes? I'm fairly sure that this would be of value in terms of a future career aswell as being really interesting.

What I'm asking for is any suggestions about anything regarding the above. I'd be prepared to travel internationally so please suggest airlines who would be willing to accept me or better ways to get a look at the aviation industry from the perspective of a future lawyer. If the whole thing is a bit unrealsitic then please feel free to say so.

Many Thanks.

ManfredvonRichthofen 2nd February 2006 16:04

Not a moronic question at all.

If you want to do that then i suggest that you just write direct to as many contacts as you can find. Use your initiative. I have no idea whether that would work.

That kind of experience would no doubt be useful but....
What I would suggest is getting some kind of work experience in the kind of law firm you want to work for. Getting a training contract at a good firm is not easy. The more legal experience, the better chance you have (that is not to say however that experience with an airline would count for nothing).

The following is what i have been told. I start at my law firm very soon. There are some other more knowledgable guys on this board who may be able to help you further.

Aviation law (as a solicitor - i assume you will become a solicitor) is basically divided into 3 areas.
Most "aviation" work is actually asset finance work. Working with clients (banks, leasing companies, airlines etc etc) to structure the purchase of engines, aircraft etc.
There is also the much smaller litigation side - usually dealing with insurance claims arising from anything from a mid air collision to a Cabin Crew trip and slip case. Firms like Clyde & Co are big here.
Then there is the very, very limited area of regulatory work. Not alot going on here as far as I can see, though it looks like interesting work.

Why not write direct to airlines' in house lawyers ? Most will have at least one i should imagine.
Try looking at the Legal 500 website
http://www.icclaw.com/l500/frames/inho_fr.htm

click on "in-house lawyers".
Or just phone the companies and ask for the legal dept contact details.

They may tell you where to stick it. They may remember what it was like to be you and give you a stint in their office. You never know...
That would be great experience

I also have a feeling that Airbus might offer a work experience scheme in Toulouse. Check their website.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do

London City Airport Work Experience

Hi all,

Recently I emailed London City Airport through their email form on their website.
I got a reply the next day and the reply gave me a contact number to call.

Stupidly I accidently deleted this email before I called the number given to me so does anyone know who to contact or contact details for work experience at London City Airport?

I have tried emailing again but no reply this time :ugh:

Feel free to PM if neccessary.

DanGrossett 21st February 2006 08:06

Hi there

Not sure if you are still looking for the right contact for work experience at London City, but try Jill Budden or Angeline Barnes.

I used to work there and that's who was responsible. I left just over a year ago, but I know they are still there.

Work Experience

Hi all,
I am aiming to start a BEng in Aeronautical Engineering later this year, with the intent of becoming an Engineer in the RAF, however over the summer I am looking to build up some money for uni whilst also gaining some practical experience. I was wondering whether I could find a job with an airline/maintence company at an airport/airfield for the summer, sweeping the floors, making the tea, whatever was neccessary to be in an Aero Eng enviroment, gaining a small amount of experience (beats woking in a shop). Does anyone know the best way to approach this or maybe of any companies that may be symapthetic, or do I ahve a 'cat-in-hells chance'. All advice appreciated.

G.
