Thanks guys!

Does anybody have any idea what a 'panel exercise' is? Is it panel as in a panel of people, or panel as in squares/tiles... not a clue

Haha I doubt it's the latter! Maybe it's a group presentation or something presenting to the panel and dealing with changes from the panel.

pjharb 21st Sep 2016 13:22

Wow congratulations! I was wondering where you were. I'll see you on the Saturday then? ;)

pjharb 21st Sep 2016 13:32

Yeah you'll get an email today or tomorrow when Julie comes back :-). As a heads up, request your Basic Disclosure online as quick as you can as it takes up to 2 weeks to arrive, although you can also present an application reference number if it doesn't come in time. Head to your opticians and pick up an 'Ishihara-style vision certificate' to prove you're not colour blind. Oh and grab some passport photos. What's your name btw?

Peter

ben78 21st Sep 2016 14:45

About this ishihara certificate, do you guys know if a certificate from my ophthalmologist written, that everything is alright added to some infos about my vision will be ok?
I got one but it's written in French (you know how good we are when it comes to languages 😥) and it has obviously not the same format as you described
Just written everything is fine about colour after having done the test.

spaflyer 21st Sep 2016 15:55

What about getting a class I medical? with this you ensure you are fit ...

What about getting a class I medical? with this you ensure you are fit ...
I think it's still early days yet to be forking out the cash for that.

I've just booked an isahira (whatever it's called) test in specsavers for 7pm this evening, 15 euro ... they also want me to get passport photos, apparently they have some form where they put your picture on it and they sign.

spaflyer 21st Sep 2016 16:10

Yes but something you will need for sure in the future! so why not have it done now, and then be sure that if all effort and time is worthy.. and I said that because I got some issues when get mine loong time ago... so best option is to get it right away.

FlyVeryHigh- 21st Sep 2016 16:13

Go to specsavers, get a free eye test (vouchers online! - I can only speak for UK) and get the optician to do the colour test whilst there. They can write it out on a little slip, sign and stamp. That is sufficient.

Don't fork out for the Class 1 med just yet, Aer Lingus usually fund it if you get that far.

Regarding background checks, just do an online Basic Disclosure Scotland, £25. Reference/proof of application is sufficient.

ben78 21st Sep 2016 16:23

Thanks guys :)
I already have my class 1 actually. I have to renew it but it is really nothing. If Aer Lingus really need to know I am alright I can prove them, but I just wanted to have no problem next by presenting them the "home-made" certificate :) I will stay sticked to that and like you Flyveryhigh, I believe that is going to be alright.
And I forgot, Congrats Momo :)

momo95 22nd Sep 2016 10:32

Can anyone here trying to get a disclosure from England please explain what must be done? I lived there for a year a few years back.

All I can read online is that either your employer must apply for it on your behalf, or that you have to go to your local police station to obtain one. I live in Dublin so I cannot go to a police station, and obviously Aer Lingus aren't applying on our behalves.

Can anyone please advise?

spaflyer 22nd Sep 2016 10:55

You can get yourself the basic one, requested online.

FlyVeryHigh- 22nd Sep 2016 10:57

You can apply for a Disclosure Scotland online: https://www.disclosurescotland.co.uk...closureonline/

N.b: If your current address its outside of the UK then you must apply using the paper form.

FlyVeryHigh- 22nd Sep 2016 11:07

Yeah Disclosure Scotland seems to be preferred by airlines (certainly in the UK anyway). I'm not scottish... nor english.

momo95 22nd Sep 2016 11:29

OK thanks for that !

Edit: Peter I sent you a pm yesterday in case you didn't see it

pjharb 22nd Sep 2016 13:06

Replied :)

momo95 26th Sep 2016 08:52

So are people getting on with this? And who's up soon?

ry.de 26th Sep 2016 17:02

Hi guys !
Would anyone who did the interviews today, could tell me at what time does this end (approximately)...? to try to book a flight back home...? thanks in advance

polar25 30th Sep 2016 13:55

So guys, how do you think it went this week? Thought it was an enjoyable day but definitely tough! Liked the idea of the panel exercise too!

momo95 30th Sep 2016 14:51

I hear it was quite tough yes !

FlyVeryHigh- 1st Oct 2016 17:19

Well! That's it, assessments done. I made it through the whole day, waiting on a response now. Found the interview quote tough having to think on my feet.

That is it yes, i felt the morning was hilarious too !

LostInFlight88 1st Oct 2016 20:07

Sincerely well done all for getting to the assessment stage. Those who made it through the whole day.. congratulations and best of luck! Do let us know how you get on. Those who didn't get through today... you made it this far.. don't give up now.... I hope I find the strength to take my own advice!!! Peace.

luda171 1st Oct 2016 20:18

Made is through the day, thought it was quite unfair however to cut the group in half after the group/panel exercise, i dont think anyone was given the chance before a interview to show why they want to be a commercial pilot, they made is sound as if it was a staffing issue that made them do it and on the email a cut was never mentioned half way through

LostInFlight88 1st Oct 2016 22:30

Well said luda171. So much prep into answering interview questions. Didn't even get a chance to demonstrate passion and enthusiasm for aviation... and show them what we are really made of. My perception is that everyone in that room today was a talented individual to get so far...but there are only a certain number of spaces, so it was a case of splitting hairs. That's my story and I am sticking to it! Oh and I was having an 'off' day... of course lol

hundred_above 1st Oct 2016 23:03

What happened exactly? Did they just send some people away without an interview?

polar25 2nd Oct 2016 11:37

Well they had a big group exercise and a panel exercise in smaller groups before sending half of the group home before interview. The other half got through to interview after lunch.

I felt that the interview was tough but that the questions asked weren't particularly deep enough for us to showcase our true ability or motivation or indeed exactly how much preparation I had actually done! That's just my own opinion and I know other people got asked different questions so we shall see!

Fingers crossed!

17thhour 2nd Oct 2016 12:32

I agree, it was dissapointing not to get an interview having travelled there- a particularly harsh process. I would have thought cutting more people at the video stage would have been fairer financially to everyone who travelled there only to get told to go home half way through.

This in no way takes away from the achievement of those getting through. The calibre of people there was truly exceptional so they are doing something right and I can sit here sound in the knowledge that I was bested by some extremely great guys and gals.

Good luck to you all!

hundred_above 2nd Oct 2016 12:35

How many was in a group? Will those people not be interview at all then? That's horrible if so. Did they perform poorly in the group exercises? What was this panel exercise exactly?

Sorry for all the questions!

Absolutely! It was a fairly brutal process but I assume they take scores from all stages into account when deciding who got to the interview and indeed who goes to the psychologist.

Best of luck everyone!

FlyVeryHigh- 2nd Oct 2016 14:06

I agree with the above. I had lunch with a lot of the guys and girls on my day and we just had no idea who was going or who was staying. I felt so bad for those getting sent home. A lot of them were fantastic people with bags of experience and enthusiasm and amazing backgrounds (aviation wise!).

Definitely a bit of luck involved in terms of what group you got put with I think as there is inevitably some strong personalities.

I felt the technical aspect of my interview weren't that technical, more hypothetical and what ifs. The HR type questions didn't really give you the opportunity to showcase your knowledge on aviation either.

We'll just see what happens!

Ginger1 2nd Oct 2016 15:05

Seems a little unfair to have a cut half way through the day. Effectively, you were competing against your group, not the people in other groups.

polar25 2nd Oct 2016 17:45

Did anyone else feel that their interview could have gone better? I stumbled on a couple of questions but got there eventually; I felt that I didn't do too great!

I think that will always bevthe case, replaying questions in the mind and thinking of far better things thar could have been said

Markc34 2nd Oct 2016 21:03

Well done everyone who made it to the interview! I got that far also! Best of luck :) Now the waiting starts...

FFfrusciante 3rd Oct 2016 21:11

I was fortunate enough to make it through to interview. I enjoyed the process to be honest and found all the assessors to be very genuine and sincere. The thing with the first two exercises in the morning is that they unfortunately (or fortunately depending which way you look at it) give people the rope to hang themselves with. For example, forcibly making yourself a leader in a leaderless exercise. I appreciate people's comments regarding not being able to display their aviation knowledge and motivations for applying but I think the two morning exercises show a lot more of a person than you realise and as such can be fairly used to filter people.

ScotWings 4th Oct 2016 06:58

I made it to final 72 interviewees as well, and found the day really good!

While it probably was quite hard to shine in the big group exercise, there were around 6 or 8 assessors per group of 12 to keep an eye on us. It is fairly obvious when watching a group like this to see who's got the spark they were looking for.

I thought the panel was a very good test. It clearly shows them how you interact in a small group setting (such as on an a320), and at the same time tests your aviation knowledge. Without a broad knowledge of the industry, you'd struggle to form any arguments.

Best of luck to everyone who got through (as long as you leave a place for me!), and hopefully not too long to wait!

polar25 4th Oct 2016 07:48

I agree with ScotWings and FF, I just wonder how much weighting is placed on each of the elements, especially seeing that they put a panel exercise in there for a reason! I hope that they take an overall picture of the day when inviting people to the next round and not too much weighting is placed on the interview as opposed to the other tasks... (for my own sake!).

All the best to everyone waiting, I'm sure you'll all make fine pilots!

ry.de 4th Oct 2016 09:17

On the last day, only 9 made it to the interview stage, I'm guessing they already filled much of the spaces earlier in the week. The team was making their very best to make us as comfortable as possible and it was really appreciable. Best of luck to everyone !
