Thanks for your comments PP though I appear to have missed a few details out of my original post. I did indeed type Morrisby into yahoo and come up with the same results myself, plus the Guardian Unlimited examples which seemed simple enough - however I felt it prudent to see if any of the thousands of pruners may perhaps have had a little extra tip or something that may have been useful. Thorough preparation and all! My fault for not including that in my thread. (You could answer can't tell I suppose!!) Also, I am not at all confused about psychometric testing and aptitude testing, but was just trying to ascertain whether these specific tests were possibly more personality/behaviour orientated or aimed to assess practical suitability to fly. As the exams last 3.5 hours They could indeed be both - I am just trying to research and prepare as thoroughly as possible, using the maximum available resources. Cheers.

Still not sure you really understand about psychometrics from this quote;The point is that psychometric tests come in all sorts of flavours. Aptitude testing is just one variety and this encompasses verbal and numerical reasoning (English and Maths tests to you and me!) diagrammatic or spatial reasoning (you know, all the shapes and patterns and sequences etc) and personality profiling (where you have to choose your preference between a fluffy bunny and a shotgun).

So the tests are designed to get an overall picture of the individual, finding out about learned skills (in the aptitude tests) and personal character traits (from the personality profile), which incidently can't be learned, they are fixed from an early age.

If they want to test your pure flying ability (or potential) they will give you some kind of hand/ eye co-ordination test, such as a simulator assessment, but they want much more than just flying ability these days, hence why they run all the other assessments.

I have little experience of RAF entry tests, perhaps you may get more feedback in the military forum, but Morrisby run psychometrics so the above is highly relevant if that's what the RAF use.

Thanks PP. Speaking to a psychologist graduate friend of mine he seems to think these particular tests are "cognitive" (logic vs knowledge vs character and how you can relate them all). I think the overall result is that you just answer honestly and then hope for the best. As you say, mostly these sort of things are implanted from an early age so it's not the sort of thing you can revise for. I'll just cross my fingers/toes etc and give them my best shot. I'm chuffed just to have got to this stage so I certainly will be taking each stage as(if!!) it comes. Anyone else out there. . . . . good luck!!!! :ok:

Your friend is indeed correct, they are called 'cognitive' tests, or at least the verbal, numerical and spacial/ diagrammatic tests are. I have not heard the personality profile referred to as such in that it is not a test of learned skills or applied knowledge, it's about preferences.

So with the personality profile you are correct; just be honest and your profile will be accurate (within the limits of the test!)

The other cognitive tests however are all about knowledge, learned, applied, percieved, visualisation etc etc. There is no need to be honest and see what happens with these......you can do an awful lot of preparation for these to dramatically improve your scores, so if you are to sit a selection that utilises these tests do get online and sit the many free ones, go to the library and spend a few hours running through examples and looking back to see where you went wrong. It will be time well spent and may make the difference between pass and fail.

So what did you think of the physcometric tests? Thought they were ok, the competition looked a bit tough though! Fingers crossed!
If we're not lucky enough to get it, I like the sound of the runners up names going to the company though.

Andrew - yeah the tests weren't too bad. Went by quicker than I thought!

It doesn't sound a bad deal with some of the names going onto the school. At least it gives you another option I guess.

I have got through to the next stage of the GAPAN scheme. I got through last year and here are the details of the psychometric tests;

First - they test your ability to spend money by giving them 50 quid to take the test

Second - look like a dullard - you´ll go far

Third - they test your attention by trying to sell you an ATPL course down at London City Uni

Fourth - be a bonafide spotter (know your winglets fellas!!) (this tests your eyesight)

Fifth - The banana eating contest went well though!
