what navigation aid is necessary for aircraft to be able to fly NATs (north atlantic)

A Loran C should be enough :p

IRS IS NOT a navigation AID but is an aircraft's equipment. A GPS would be a navigation AID to cross the Atlantique....

A bubble sextant attached to a licenced navigator. Then it's his worry. :p

Two, independent GNSS (GPS), RNP 10 or better, receivers in addition to all the ground based nav instruments usually required. I'm pretty sure, anyway.

A navigator and a compass used to be more than adequate

Technically the answer is none. As it is MNPS airspace.
The question should be what Navigation systems does an aircraft require.
